Ohh... What happened? Where am I?

Rebecca squinted up into the harsh florescent lights. Her mind was in a daze. She tried to move, but she was too weak, her fatigue threatening to send her back to sleep any moment. She blinked, and called on her last remaining energy to stay awake. She had to figure out what was going on.

She was too tired to turn on her side, but she managed to turn her head and forced herself to keep her eyes open, despite the painfully bright light. Slowly, her eyes adjusted and details began to emerge from the sea of white blur around her.

She was laying in a bed, she realized, covered by snug white linen sheets. A sound penetrated her chaotic thoughts, a consistent beeping from beside her. She focused her eyes beyond the bed and finally made out a machine. She stared at it for a long minute, before it finally registered in her mind. The machine was an IV pole. A plastic tube ran down the pole, and disappeared beneath her sheets.

Another sound began, this one clearly some sort of alarm or buzzer. She heard voices from somewhere, and the creaking of a door opening.

Several faces appeared around her bed, looking down at her from behind surgical masks. One of the disembodied faces approached the IV pole, and turned off the buzzer. Another face appeared, this time accompanied by a gray, indistinct body. This figure injected a syringe into the IV line, and suddenly Rebecca's mind began to clear. The room's overpowering glare died down, until she could see the walls and machines around her with clarity. The faces and figures quickly turned into men and women in surgical gowns, clearly nurses and doctors.

She coughed and tried to speak, her parched voice cracking. Where am I? Is this a hospital?

Her words came out slowly, slightly slurred. A nurse held out a paper cup of water for her, and helpfully tilted it against her chapped lips. The cold water was refreshing and Rebecca looked up at the woman gratefully.

The nurse lifted away her mask, smiling back at her. And Rebecca gasped!
