Tania entered the barn in her party dress and high heels. She was slightly wobbly, not from the uneven ground, but from too much to drink.

“Hello?” she called out. “Chuck?”

“Yes?” The assistant trained appeared as if from out of nowhere giving Tania a start.

“You scared me!” She laughed at her reaction and figured she was drunk enough to miss the obvious sounds of his approach. “I’m not late am I?”

“What’s the expression? A woman is never late; she’s always on time when a man is expecting her.”

Although she was already slightly red-faced from the party, Tania still managed to blush some more. “I’ll take that.” She paused and looked around the barn. It was empty except for some bored looking horses. Normally it was bustling with activity. It was strange in the middle of the night. “Okay, true confession time. I only came here for the sex.” She laughed at her boldness and wondered how the normally quiet and seemingly shy Chuck would react.

“That’s what I figured. You don’t want to have sex in the barn, do you?”

“No.”

He grinned. “Come with me. There’s some private rooms out back.” He didn’t take her hand and made no indication of affection other than to gesture once as he looked back at her. Obediently Tania followed.

Chapter One

Tania knew she was there for window dressing and nothing more. The trainers and owners were always old men, the jockeys were too short and wiry to be photogenic, and the few women with any actual connection to the horses were often practical women who, at best, could be described as plain. Through a friend of a friend Tania had found herself invited to the private box at the racetrack to be there to attract the right kind of attention, the right kind of eyes, and the right kind of media.

How do you know all this? Tania had asked Beth.

With a roll of her eyes Beth answered, I’ve been doing it for a few years. You’re expected to dress and play the part. It’s all very discrete. The money’s under the table, and it’s good money, just don’t discuss the fact that you’re being paid to appear there. You at least have to pretend to have an interest in horse racing.

She needed the money because this summer she hadn’t been able to land even a small role at a paying theater production. Taking the train up to Saratoga and hobnobbing with the moneyed elite didn’t sound so bad. It wasn’t an imposition to be at the track every day, well-dressed and coifed, to cheer on whichever horses she was told to. It was a bit of a drag after a few days, but when the owner’s personal assistant slipped her an envelope after the first week and she saw the cash in side, Tania resolved that she could somehow struggle through six weeks of horse
