Inside, the church was cool and quiet.

James took a deep breath, pleased to get in out of the heat, and waited for his deep blue eyes to adjust to the darkness. Strange hues of light filtered down through the stained-glass windows, and he could make out a few faithful churchgoers kneeling, lighting candles, and rubbing shoulders with a couple of bored tourists.

At least there's nothing to get me worked-up here, he thought.

Adjusting his crotch idly with one hand, he headed down one of the aisles, frowning disapprovingly at the grisly crucifixes. The place was all naked male torsos, writhing muscles, gratuitous beads of blood.

And Katie likes this stuff? He shuddered. What if she wants me to come every Sunday, after we're married?
