About this ebook
Knowledge is good. It shows that you are aware of certain truths, facts, or principles, regarding what it is that you need to do. Entrepreneurs with the knowledge of what is needed to build, manage, and grow a delight machine of a business for lasting success are light years ahead of those who donʼt know what to do.
Power coupled with knowledge is better. Power means that you have the ability to act. Entrepreneurs with the right knowledge of what to do along with the ability to act on it are in a great position to build a thriving business.
Application of your knowledge is best. It puts your power to good use and puts you on the road to realizing your dream of a thriving business.
If you donʼt apply what you learn about how to succeed with your business, then your knowledge and your power wonʼt do you much good. This workbook is all about helping you apply the knowledge gained from Delight Inside, so you can skip the detours and get to realizing your dream for your business.
Knowledge + Power + Application = Delight (There is a teeny, tiny bit of math in this book. It wonʼt hurt. Promise.)

Introduction
As you journey along building your business that is filled with delight, it will be beneficial to you to write down your plans and the steps you need to take to get you there. As brilliant as your mind is, sometimes it’s easy to forget things. And sometimes you just need to see things written down so you can connect the dots, spark new ideas, and see opportunities for improvement. The goal of this workbook is to help you along your journey to becoming a delight machine by helping you apply the concepts introduced in the Delight Inside book.
Don’t take the easy way out! If you’re anything like me, you may get a little annoyed with writing down the answers to all these questions. You may say things like, I know this already,
or Do I really have to do this?
or even I don’t really need to know or think about that.
However, do it anyway. Resist the urge to skip questions or write down generic answers, and really put the effort into completing the workbook. It will help you think of your business in a different way, and will guide you down a path of creating it to be just what you want it to be. I can’t promise you won’t get annoyed as you go through this, but I feel good that as you go along completing the sections that you will gain clarity about what you need to do to build your business for lasting success.
It doesn’t matter if your business exists already and you are working on ways to make it better, or whether it exists only in your mind. Write out your answers as best as you can. And if your business hasn’t yet launched, come back and revisit some of your responses once you are ready. This workbook is meant to help you work on your business over the long- term, thus the goal is not for you to go through it just one time and put it down never to be looked at again. It’s an ongoing work in progress. Just like your business.

Chapter 1
Purpose
AND WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS AGAIN?
OFTEN when we decide to embark on a new challenge, goal, or dream, there are circumstances in life that help plant the seed and or propel us forward. Describe the circumstances that led you to start your business.
Remember, you get to choose what your business will be! What is the dream you have for your business? Write down how you envision it working.
Describe the impact that your business will have on the following groups by operating in the manner you described above.
You:
Your team:
Your community:
Your customers (present and future):
On a scale of 1 to 10, rate how close your business is to the vision you described above (1 = Not even in the same ballpark. 10 = Exactly what I had dreamed of.). Explain your rating.
If you didn’t answer a 10 above, on a scale of 1 to 10, rate your level of motivation to get your business to be what you dream it to be (1 = I’m just fine where I am. 10 = Nothing can stop me from getting there.). Explain your rating.
Describe the impact that your business will have on the following groups if it doesn’t reach the vision you describe above:
You:
Your team:
Your community:
Your customers (present and future):
Peter Drucker, considered the father of modern-day business management said the success of outstanding businesses rests to a larger extent on clearly and deliberately raising the question,
What is our business? and answering it thoughtfully and thoroughly.
¹ Write down your answer to this very important question:
What is your business?
As you define what your business is, it helps to clarify what your business is not. Describe what your business is not.
Why does your business exist? What is the purpose that it fulfills?
Businesses are not people, but they definitely have personalities. Your core values will greatly influence and shape the personality of your business. As people spend time with your business and develop a relationship with it, they will identify with these core values. What are the core principles that you will hold most valuable in your business?
Conversely, what are the things that you will not stand for?
You’ve no doubt heard that it takes a village to raise a child. It often takes a great team (your village) to build a great business. Who are your key advisors and sources of support?
Developing Your Mission Statement
Choosing what your business will be is the first and most important choice you will make in designing it to be great. Your mission statement will capture the essence of what your business is in written word. In developing or refining your mission statement, who else may need to be involved? It is often helpful to get the input of others to ignite and or pressure test your thinking. Consider your current team, business partners, and advisors. You’re not in this alone!
Write down your mission statement.
Review your mission statement for clarity. How does it answer the question, Why does your business exist?
Review your mission statement again. Is it specific rather than generic? Can another business in an unrelated field have the same mission?
