    Jack walked down the center of the street strewn with abandoned cars and swirling trash.

    There’s got to be somebody out here, he thought.

    His hands shook noticeably. He grabbed them in each other trying to still his nerves.

    Come on, he mumbled softly. Get a grip on yourself. You aren’t hungry or thirsty or ill. The plague passed you over for some reason, and now you’re cursed to live alone. This is your lot in life. Get with it.
