Reviews for The Soulkeepers

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Jacob Lau is special. But he doesn't know it yet. He's uprooted from his home, his mother is missing, and he can't catch a break from anyone in this tiny little town. That's when he meets Malini. A beautiful young girl who makes him feel wonderful, protective and strong all at the same time. But then things start to get weird. First of all, Jake's anger issues have gotten him in trouble a time or two and now he has to be punished by being a slave to the crazy neighbor across the street, Dr. Silva. A fight between good and evil will ensue before the true reason why Jacob is on this Earth will be revealed.Very good book. I will be looking forward to the next two in the series.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I actually found this book to be slow and lackluster, which is unfortunate because Jacob was a really great character. Sadly, there just wasn't enough to keep me interested, and I stopped reading about halfway through. I'm tempted to pick it back up someday since I've read several great reviews about the ending, but I won't be returning to this series anytime soon.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Going into The Soulkeepers, i wasn't to sure about what was going to be happening in the story. When I started reading, I was immediately hooked, and I was blown away by The Soulkeepers. It met and then flew past my expectations. The story of The Soulkeepers was one that I would love to read again and again. It takes some common elements of paranormal books, and blends them into a novel that is unlike any I have ever read before. Jacob needs to find his mother, but the only way to do so is by becoming a Soulkeeper. A Soulkeeper is kind of like a person with some sort of awesome power or powers. I don't really wanna give away the surprise of Jacob's power and such, so I'll leave it up to you to read the book to find out! :) Anyways, the story is full of twists and turns. I had no clue who was who in the sense of who to think was evil or who to think was the good guy. My guesses kept changing and in the end, I was still wrong. The story is action packed and there was not a dull moment when reading it. It grabs you and keeps you hooked until the extremely EPIC ending. As I said before, I have never seen anything like this book, and it was amazing. It was definitely a refreshing read. One of my favorite aspects of the book was the amazing cast of lovable characters. Every single one of them was developed and seemed real. Jacob definitely had his flaws, and that's what really made him seem real. Malini was great. She was definitely one of my favorite characters in The Soulkeepers. She was smart and sweet and I think she really was one of the things that helped Jacob grow as a character. The romance between Jacob and Malini was great, and it really made me feel for both of them when... things happened between them. Bad things. Then there was Doctor Silva. Oh my god. What do I even say. i can say that I loved her, I can say that I hated her, and I can say that i kinda wish she died at times. Mostly in the beginning though. I really don't know what to say about her without giving too much away. She was a great character, perfectly mysterious and very creepy. Jacob's family, while remaining pretty minor in the story, were very interesting. The relationships between them and Jacob, who they hadn't met until he was forced upon them, seemed strained as they would in real life. It was nice to see Jacob warm up to them throughout the story. My one complaint was that Jacob, being the main character, seemed to take a bit longer than the other characters to make me feel connected to him. With the other main characters, it was kinda like they were introduced and I automatically felt like I really knew them, but Jacob just took a little while longer.G.P.'s writing was amazing. It was beautiful and fast paced and definitely will keep you hooked. Normally I don't like third person, but Ms. Ching did it very well. I think it really made the story work too, as we really needed to see it from other character's perspectives at times. It also really kept the story moving, with something constantly happening. She really made me love the character's and feel like I was there with them when I was reading, which was great. Overall, I give it 4.5 stars. I recommend you all go check out The Soulkeepers. It will keep you up for hours at night and its definitely a story worth reading!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5What a great story! The Soulkeepers revolves around half-Chinese/half-Caucasian Jacob Lau, a teenager living alone with his mother on the island of Oahu. He suddenly wakes up in a hospital after having a near-death experience, and afterward, his mother goes missing. Now apparently orphaned, an uncle he has never met takes young Jacob home to a rural town in Illinois called Paris (ironically nothing at all like the famous city in France).Across the street from his uncle's house lives Dr. Abigail Silva, a strange, but uber beautiful woman who eventually tells Jacob all about his true identity. He is a Soulkeeper, a descendant of God who has special abilities to manipulate the elements in order to protect the souls of mankind on Earth.I love how cleverly the Judeo-Christian mythos is weaved into the story to explain what Soulkeepers are and how they came to be. Jacob doesn't even believe in God, as he is a sort of atheist, but that which the Old Testament claims just keeps coming to pass all throughout the story in unique ways. All of the supernatural gets explained by what is contained mostly in the book of Genesis and it's all very fascinating.Jacob is realistically written and easy to sympathize with, as is Malini, his best friend. I liked Dr. Silva, and discovering her back-story and that of her super intelligent cat, Gideon, helped turn both of them into some riveting characters. We discover the mystery surrounding Jacob's mother, but there is also a mystery surrounding his deceased father and his family. I get the feeling what little was explained in this volume is not the true extent of it. I'm sure there's more to the Laudner family than meets the eye, so I'm looking forward to the next book to see what will be revealed.Besides having a winning cover (Jacob is gorgeous!), The Soulkeepers casts well-developed characters in a plot that naturally and gradually unfolds its mysteries over the course of the story just perfectly, leaving the reader wanting to uncover more and more.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5To say that I found The Soulkeepers anything short of astounding would be an understatement and total lie. The book grabbed me from the very first line: "Death lived up to Jacob's expectations." and never let go. The concept of the storyline was genius. Every line, every word felt well-thought out and meaningful. The main character of The Soulkeepers, Jacob, is an endearing, heartbreaking hero. The desperation he feels after the loss of his mother and subsequent upheaval is visceral. The author, GP Ching, does a remarkable job in her narrative describing Jacob's pain and rage. "He turned away from John and shoved the anger down deep, where it coiled like a snake in his gut. Once Jacob does form a connection to classmate and fellow outcast, Malini, that connection feels beautiful and poignant. GP Ching also has a way with what I'll call "The Spooky Factor". What I think I mean is, The Soulkeepers never felt like an outright horror book to me, no slashing or blood-letting, but I was completely creeped out (in a good way). The character of Dr. Abigail Silva is frightening, or is she? And without being spoiler-ish, I'll just say when Jacob finds "Oswald", I almost felt as if I were watching an episode of "The Twilight Zone". When I finished The Soulkeepers I was so stunned that I thought I should wait a few days to write a review because I needed time to digest the story. I quickly realized that waiting made no difference. I was just as stunned when "later" came. GP Ching has a style of writing that feels deliberate. There were details to the writing that seemed insignificant, but each made the story all the much better: " her foot came out in a powerful shot that slammed the door in his face. A road sign that read 'Private Property' swung forward on it's hook toward the tip of his nose". A true example of the expression "It's all in the details". I don't want anyone who reads this to think that I am, for lack of a better term, blowing smoke. I mean each and every word in this review. My only regret is that I feel I am lacking in giving GP Ching and The Soulkeepers their due. There was not one thing that I didn't like about the book. So here is one last, whole-hearted endorsement. If you want to read a thought-provoking, moving book, get The Soulkeepers. Now.
