Reviews:
“Astro and Susan are at it again. This series is sort of like Lassie on laughing gas, sweet on one hand, funny on the other (unlike Lassie which was so saccharine sweet you'd get tooth decay). I know the author lives in Melbourne. I suggest she puts forward an idea to cable TV for a TV show. ASTRO'S ADVENTURES would hardly be out of place on one of the kids stations...” D. Mason

Susan Day

Susan is an author, canine behaviourist, and a storyteller. She lives with her family and dogs, in particular, Rocky the Border collie and Stella, the blind dog. She spends her time blogging, writing and illustrating; training and counselling dogs and being bossed around by the family cat, Speed Bump Charlie and his sidekick, Furball (see Dogs in Space). Susan travelled around the world twice before she was seven years old. It seemed only fitting that the wonderful events she experienced and the places she visited on these journeys be recorded for history. Thus, her story telling skills began. Firstly, to Rupert Bear, her lifelong companion, and then to a host of imaginary friends and finally to her pet dog once the family finally set down roots in Australia. Susan is passionate about children's literature and wants to inspire children to be better people and encourage them to follow their dreams. She runs workshops for children teaching them how to form the wonders of their imaginations into stories. Susan lives in a small country town where there are more kangaroos than people. She shares her country property with four dogs, three cats, three rescue guinea pigs and a very large fish and her patient husband. More about her adventures are reflected in Clarence the Snake from Dunolly.

    Chapter 1

Standing in his office Commander Rocky cleared his throat and spoke bravely. So, Major Dakota, we meet again!

The ghost quivered. He had just been released from a wooden box by Hans who was opening the mail. It had been sent directly to the headquarters of The Organisation: a secret society that had been established to keep dogs safe from neglect. It existed all over the world but no human being knew anything about.

The ghost broke out in a wide grin. Yes, it hissed at Commander Rocky.

What do you want? Commander Rocky asked bravely.

Me? the ghost laughed menacingly. Why Commander Rocky, I want you!

And with that he reached out, grabbed Commander Rocky by the paw and they both disappeared in a puff of green smoke.

Meanwhile under Commander Rocky’s command, Hans had assembled the Operatives in the conference room. They were waiting for Commander Rocky to come and give them their orders. Hans had already told them what had happened in the office: of how he had picked up a small wooden box and how the ghost of an old dog had shot out.

You should have seen it! he exclaimed. It had skin falling from its bones. It had one eye missing and it was so big it nearly touched the ceiling!

Operative Astro was staring ahead and shaking his head in disbelief. Stella D’oro stared down at the table in thought. Both Operatives, Indy and Digger, sat with their mouths wide open in shock. Operative Dingo, the small rat terrier, shook uncontrollably in fear but Operative Alfie wasn’t really paying much attention. He was searching under the table for food.

Usually when they had a meeting Commander Rocky pressed a button and a bowl of water and a bowl of biscuits appeared from a secret compartment under the table. Alfie was trying to figure out for himself how to get the bowls to come up. It had been a least 14 minutes since his last meal and he was feeling a little peckish.

What do you think Commander Rocky will do? gasped Operative Digger.

He’ll soon deal with the ghost, Indy nodded confidently. I wish I was there right now. She rubbed her hunting bone menacingly.

Do you think he’ll bring it in he-he-he-here... here?! Dingo shook so much his teeth began to chatter.

    I hope not! squealed Digger.

Stella D’oro took in a deep breath and slowly exhaled. She was blind but she had special powers. She lifted up her head and turned to Hans.

I think you had better return to the office, Hans, she said. Commander Rocky has gone.

Gone? What do you mean? Hans was beginning to panic.

    Where? asked Astro, bewildered.

Stella shook her head. I’m not sure where but he’s no longer in the building.

She stopped and cocked her head to one side. I’m not even sure he’s in the country anymore.

The Operatives all stopped and looked at her. They all knew she had special powers and knew about things before they happened. She could even use her mind to travel to places and see what was going on. Stella D’oro was only a small dog but they knew she always got it right.

We had all better go, said Astro getting out of his chair. Safety in numbers!

In the Commander’s office, Hans, Stella D’oro and the Operatives all stood in silence. The small wooden box sat on the table but Commander Rocky was not there. He had completely vanished.

Hans rushed to the telephone and rang reception. The Organisation had been started many years ago to save dogs from neglect. It was hidden behind a Doggy Day Care centre where dogs came to have fun playing with other dogs while their owners were at work. Hans asked the dog on reception if she had seen Commander Rocky leave.

    He put the phone
