Carrie, crunch these numbers for me, and let's see where the preliminary proposal stands, Bob said as he tossed a pile of papers on my desk.

Um, it's 3:20 and I don't think I can get it done, I said, but I knew it was useless.

How about we pretend there are no clocks, he smiled sarcastically. We're at work, and we just do the work we're supposed to do, he spoke slowly. Thank you.

What the fuck, I mumbled to myself as I shuffled through the papers. My workday ends at 3:30. I have kids to pick up, dinner to make, laundry in the dryer from yesterday, and a husband that I barely know anymore.

Yep, our boss is a prick, but I guess we're lucky to have a job, Mike peeked up over the edge of the cubicle wall that divided us.

I guess so, I huffed. But seriously, there are two hundred other accountants on this floor. Why me?

Hmm, Mike pretended to scratch his head like a monkey. "Perhaps it's a little ass he's looking for. He never asks me to work late. Never bothers Margie over there," he pointed at the end cubicle of the lady that smells of mothballs.

Really Mike? That's disgusting. Bob is repulsive, I shuttered.

He's got the money too. Yep he does, so that husband of yours better watch out, he laughed.

Okay, well Tim's got nothing to worry about, I laughed.

Anyway, Carrie have a nice night, Mike said as he picked up his briefcase and headed for the door.

If I didn't have a mortgage to pay, I'd quit this job. I'm thirty-two years old, and I shouldn't have to feel like some asshole owns me. Who am I kidding? He does own me. Natalie is in ballet, and Ryan just started karate classes. Sometimes I feel like I've signed my life away so I can survive. My paycheck barely covers my gas, car payment, children's activities, and some of the mortgage.

Hey Tina, I said as I called my neighbor.

    Hi Carrie. You at work?

Yeah, I'm going to have to stay a little late tonight, would you mind getting Ryan and Natalie off the bus? I know it's a short notice but-

No problem. I'll be out there anyway getting mine off the bus. I hope that jerk's paying you double time for all your extra help.

That'd be nice, but I'd be lucky to get anything at all, I spoke low into the phone.

Seriously Carrie, don't let that boss of yours bully you. He's lucky to have you. You could go anywhere you wanted and make twice as much.

    I don't know about that, I laughed.

I'm not joking. Hey, I've been thinking about taking a yoga class down at the community center. Maybe you'll come with me. It's on Saturdays. Not that you need it or anything, but maybe just so I don't have to go alone. Just think about it okay? I know you're busy.

Maybe. I'll think about it. Thanks Tina, I owe you.

It took me just over an hour to get Bob's budget proposal together. I don't know why it was such a rush. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to actually speak to him when I delivered it to his office. I really couldn't stand him. One hour may not seem like a lot to him, but to me, it put me in the middle of rush hour traffic, postponed my dinner, and took from my time with my kids.

Okay Bob, here's the budget. I compiled the totals on the cover sheet right here, I pointed. It's broken down by category on each page. Have a good night, I said
