What do you know about Rory Madden?

The black suit sitting opposite Josie scrutinized her in a way that made her uncomfortable. It was a critical, even condescending look that suggested he had already mentally dismissed her. The pen he was holding tapped an impatient rhythm on the blank notepad lying on the table.

Her best friend Brent had handed her the application and urged her to fill it out. When she had been invited for an interview, she had not known what to expect, but she had imagined something out of the ordinary. To be sitting in an actual, literal job interview was a bit of a curve ball.

The next tap of the pen was louder, more impatient. Josie realized she had been quiet for longer than she had intended.

Uh… She clenched her hands into fists and tried to chase away the nervousness that had reared its ugly head as soon as she had entered the small interview room. He is thirty-three. He’s a famous, accomplished musician. He is the singer of Ritual Sin. He’s from…

She trailed off when she caught the look the suit was giving her.

Congratulations, he said, voice thick with disdain. You’ve skimmed the official biography.

She tried hard to keep it together, unwilling to give this jerk the satisfaction of watching her break down.

I’m not quite sure what you’re looking for, she confessed.

How about his sex life? What do you know about that?

Well… that’s… kind of why I’m here, isn’t it? She avoided her conversational partner’s eyes and cursed Brent for sending her here without explaining anything.

Which is precisely why I need you to answer the question, came the impatient retort.

Right. Sorry. She took a deep breath. I was told he has an interest in BDSM. He likes to have a submissive on tour with him, I think. Or several. It was the only thing Brent had explained.

Yes, she confirmed.

A moment later, the scratching of pen on paper filled the silence in the room. The suit didn’t write much, which, Josie was pretty sure, was a bad thing.

Why did you decide to apply for the position? her interviewer demanded to know after a long moment of quiet.

She had dreaded the obvious question, because she already knew she didn’t have a good answer.

I’m just looking for something. Learning about myself. Trying to figure out what I want. Josie stared at the still-moving pen. I can’t really describe it any better.

The reaction she got was a raised eyebrow.

And you think this might be what you’re looking for?

I don’t know, she answered honestly. Maybe. I thought it was worth trying.

Actually, Brent had been the one who’d thought it was worth trying. Josie knew better than to mention it, though, and waited silently while the suit took more notes.

Alright, he started after some time, leaning back with a sigh. I will introduce you to him shortly, along with another applicant. Don’t get your hopes up. He has high standards.

There was no replying to a statement like this. Josie nodded, kept her eyes low and wondered once more what in the world she had gotten herself into.

All it had taken was one small confession on her part.

Brent had been told by his brother, a producer, about Rory Madden and the newsworthy arrangement he had with the girls who accompanied him on tour. It had only been supposed to be an interesting tidbit of information while they were chatting over coffee. The powerful buzz that had taken hold of
