Chapter 1: The New Normal

Most of the summer cottages on Lake George were boarded up for the long winter, their owners having the good sense to head south to ride out the worst of the season's weather. The houses that hadn't been closed up were almost all rented to families enjoying the first man-made snows at the ski resorts in the upper elevations. In a few weeks, there would be more than enough natural snow to contend with, but it was hard to blame the operators for trying to squeeze a few more weeks of ski rentals and lift fees out of their customers.

Until the divorce, I spent my entire adult life in California and I still hadn't quite wrapped my mind around the notion of people paying good money to spend all day outside in the cold. This would be my first full winter at the lake, in the cabin that I still thought of as my uncle's. After spending a small fortune to double the insulation and replace every window in the house, it felt almost ready to face the coming cold and snow. What I wasn't ready to do was face the next five or six months holed up essentially alone with my girlfriend.

Under other circumstances, almost half a year snowbound with the petite blonde sex kitten and her gravity defying tits might have been considered a life's dream, but as often as not, Anne's mood was as bleak as the gray waters of the lake outside our windows. She'd spent the first two weeks after her husband's suicide lying in bed looking at the ceiling. In a flash she'd become the 24-year-old widow of an alleged embezzler and scam artist. Before his body was even cold, federal agents seized their houses and froze their bank accounts.

Turned away by the people who until that afternoon had claimed to be her friends Anne was left with just the cash in her pockets and a small stipend approved by the US Attorney managing the investigation into her husband. If she had spent the summer staying home and being a good wife instead of fucking me while her husband played golf, she'd have literally been out on the street. Staying there long wouldn't have been an option in our perfectly manicured gated community.

Lake George could be as parochial as any place in the country. When someone wasn't welcome, they'd have to be brain dead to miss the glaringly obvious signs that they were trespassing somewhere where they didn't belong. The old money crowd had tolerated Anne because of her late husband's money and connections. With him dead, his money gone, and his name in disgrace, the blue bloods turned on her with almost religious fervor.

At least I had the benefit of not needing to care what anyone thought of me. My family had been on the lake longer than most and my pockets were deep enough that their snubs and slights didn't make much of a difference. Since I'm a writer
