Chapter One

In fifteen minutes, Ellen Mellon—née Ellen Porter—would be really, truly divorced.

The separation was bad enough, but she’d gotten the house in the settlement, and now she’d have to unload the ugly, unwieldy thing. The shark of a lawyer her mother had hired told her to see their Newport Beach mansion for the pot of gold it would be, but it only represented years of lies and broken promises.

Determined to take her mind off the situation, she shuffled aside Time, Psychology Today, and Newsweek until she found the one semi-interesting glossy in the pile on the waiting room table.

INKED did seem like an odd choice for an attorney’s office, but she wouldn’t complain. A buff, tattooed man graced the cover. His tree-trunk arms wrapped around a sexy woman with ink twining over her skin. A pang hit her in the chest.

She studied the couple, knowing she should have wanted to be wrapped in that man’s arms. However, she didn’t envy the model. Instead, she let the insidious whisper go unchecked—the voice she’d gagged her whole marriage under the guise of sexual frustration.

She wanted to be in his place.

Would her skin be as soft as it looked? How far under her clothes did those tattoos wrap?

Would her scent be as enticing as her body?

Ellen bit her lip and shivered. She couldn’t even blame the air conditioning—her lawyer’s office was always a perfect seventy-two degrees.

The soft overhead lighting glinted off the cover and broke the spell.
