Chapter 1: Last Train

Working downtown sucked. It cost a small fortune to park anywhere. Having lunch someplace other than the hotdog cart in front of the building cost at least another hours pay. Worst of all, everyone in the city thought their shit didn’t stink. Tommy was tired of going to happy hour and getting grilled endlessly by women who only seemed to ask what Member or committee he worked for. Since he was a contractor, the lowest of the low, that’s pretty much where the conversation stopped.

Lately, none of that was an issue, though. He hadn’t been to a happy hour anywhere in weeks and his car had been in the shop with engine trouble for what felt like longer than that. The late hours played hell with what little social life he had and eventually the repair shop was really going to want him to come pick up his car and pay for the repairs.

At least the rain had stopped long enough for him to walk the three block to the Metro station without getting soaked. If he didn’t fall down the escalator and break anything, he’d be just in time to catch the last train. It was already 11:45. So much for Thirsty Thursday.

There was something unnatural about the city at night. Crawling with people during the day, it was worse than a ghost town once the sun dipped behind Lincoln’s memorial. Two nights already this week he’d caught the same train and been the only passenger in his car, maybe in the whole train since he was the only one who boarded at Federal Center station. After a transfer and a mind numbing hour ride, Tommy was almost comatose when the train rolled to a stop at the end of the line.

Tommy got to the platform and found that he had company for the first time this week. At the opposite end of the station and middle age couple looked up and down the track expectantly. Probably tourists. Sitting on the bench just at the bottom of the escalator, the girl with perfectly straight blonde hair down past her shoulders was hard to miss. Looking very proper in her off the rack business suit, Tommy assumed she was another wannabe rainmaker who stayed too late at the office.

Trying to be discrete, Tommy stood a reasonable distance away, but couldn’t help undressing her with his eyes.
