    Chapter 1: Introduction

    Congratulations on saying Yes to your life! For stepping into your destiny by learning how to create and grow a soul-based or ‘life purpose’ business that’s going to help the people in the world who desperately want and need what you have to offer. The people who are hungry for your products and services and have been anxiously waiting for you to step up and provide them the solutions they’re looking for.

    You deserve to be congratulated for taking the initiative to help those people, and to help yourself too by learning how to become a successful, prosperous entrepreneur! This practical guide will give you everything you need to know to get from wherever you are now to where you want to be—from purpose to prosperity.

    As a heart-centered entrepreneur myself, I’ve started (and sold!) several businesses over the years, and through my experiences, I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t when it comes to marketing and selling in today’s marketplace, especially if you don’t want to feel sleazy or unethical. That’s one of the biggest reasons soul-based entrepreneurs struggle to make ends meet—they don’t want to feel like they’re selling their soul to make a buck so they don’t put themselves out there in a big way. They don’t want to devalue themselves or disrespect their customers by using pushy, hype-y sales techniques. But the good news is: you don’t have to!

    In fact, in today’s world, you need to be authentic and run your business with honesty and integrity because that’s what your customers want from you! They want you to understand their needs and respect their desire to get the help you can offer them, and get that help in a way that they’re comfortable with. They don’t want to be sold to—they want to be empowered by you. And when you run your business from that perspective—of being in service to improve your customers’ lives, by giving them what they need in a format they’re comfortable with, at a price they can afford, that’s what makes them attracted to your business instead of your competitors’. It’s what makes them loyal and passionate about working with you.

    I know from my own experience that this is what makes the difference between struggling and thriving as an entrepreneur—when you focus on what your customers want and need, instead of focusing on what you want to give them, it makes the entire business process more profitable for you and more impactful for your customer.

    I’ll give you an example from my own life. For the past 20 years, I’ve been doing my passion work, but I didn’t know 20 years ago that what I was doing was actually living my purpose. I was just doing things I was good at, and making money on the side, outside of my ‘real’ job, by helping people using the talents I was born with. In my case, my talents or ‘gifts’ were writing and research and editing. I know, that probably sounds boring to some people but different strokes for different folks, right?

    Anyway, without actually going out and pursuing opportunities, I seemed to keep falling into freelance jobs that brought in extra money, like editing a screenplay for a friend, and tracking and processing royalty payments for a former employer. These things just showed up for me and I was happy to be making some extra money, but I didn’t really recognize that this was what I was meant to be doing—that I was being led to my purpose by something bigger than me. Then 10 years ago I found myself in a situation that forced me to start working from home and I discovered that I could make actually make a living doing what I’d been doing as freelancer, and it literally changed my life!

    My home-based business back then was writing and editing but it quickly morphed into something very different because of the types of customers who were coming to me for help. Most of my clients were small business owners who initially hired me to write business plans or marketing plans or were nonprofits who hired me to do grant writing for them. But what they ended up getting was really business coaching because they needed direction in how to execute on their business plan or how to provide the services that the funding agencies were giving grants for. So that’s how I ended up doing business coaching, and since that time, my business has shifted to helping people who have or want to have a soul-based business, because that’s what I’m experienced at—running a heart-centered business that helps other people and allows me to be fully in my joy, living my purpose and making a good living by doing what I love!

    You’re Already ‘On Purpose’

    Now maybe you don’t feel like you’re earning a living by living your purpose—a lot of people aren’t, but you are living your purpose right now—you’re having experiences and learning life lessons from the situations you find yourself in, and you’re figuring out how to get through maybe painful events or challenging circumstances. Every day you’re accumulating knowledge and gaining awareness and you’re hearing your heart nudging you to take these life lessons you’ve learned and share them with other people, to inspire them, or give them hope, or help them by teaching them what you’ve learned.

    This is your life purpose urging you to start living it, to start making a difference in the world by sharing who you are and the unique experience you’ve gained that will benefit other people through your sharing.

    So congratulations on taking this important first step in fulfilling your destiny—by making the conscious choice to create a soul-based business that honors your purpose. By taking this inspired action, you are already aligning yourself with success. And I know you can and will succeed.

    This book is going to give you the tools and the know-how to bring your dream into reality; all you need to do is show up. And by that I mean absorbing what you learn and doing the work and putting in the effort, taking the actions that are necessary to bring your business vision to life. I can show you how to do it but it’s ultimately up to you to apply what you’re learning to become the joyful, prosperous person you were born to be.

    The Benefits of Creating a Soul-Based Business

    Before we get started, I’d like to first talk about why a heart-centered business is so rewarding and so satisfying. In addition to helping other people, your business also:

    * Allows you to express yourself creatively by sharing your gifts, talents, wisdom, and experience in an authentic way that draws customers to you naturally;

    * Helps other people solve problems/improve their lives, making a bigger impact in the world through the ripple effect;

    * Generates income for you and creates a lasting legacy;

    * Allows you to live your purpose.

    And I keep talking about a ‘soul-based’ or ‘life purpose’ business, but what does that really mean? What’s the difference between a soul-based business and a traditional business? Let’s look at the 3 key differences.

    3 Key Differences Between Soul-Based and Traditional Businesses

    (1) Building Relationships. In a traditional business, the bottom line is to make a profit selling a product or service. Even if you are a healer or therapist whose business is to help people, the traditional business model keeps you doing things the old-school way of trading time for dollars: customers come in, you treat them, and then you move on to the next one.

    In a soul-based business, you are focused on building meaningful relationships because you are devoted to helping your customers achieve a specific goal, to make a specific improvement or solve a specific problem. You’re helping them make a transition from being in a place they’re not comfortable with, to being in a place where they’re happier, and their life feels more manageable. Even if what you’re selling are products and not services, you’re still not just selling them stuff, you’re improving their lives. You are coming from a place of caring and nurturing. You’re transforming your customers’ lives. This builds trust and loyalty which results in repeat business, referrals, and makes a bigger impact on you and your customers.

    (2) Magnetic Marketing. In a traditional business, you are constantly chasing after new business, using marketing techniques that can make you feel like a snake oil salesman because you’re always trying to convince people that you’ve got what they need. The sales process usually involves a lengthy conversation in which you’re constantly trying to overcome objections, which can make you feel like you’re begging for business. It comes off as desperate and needy, but in a soul-based business, sales happen naturally as a result of the relationships you’re building so you don’t have to chase after customers. They are magnetically drawn to you because they know your mission is to help them, that you’re not just in it for the money.

    (3) Creating a Movement. This is actually an extension of #2. In a traditional business your Unique Selling Position is product or service-based. You’re selling from the perspective of this is what the product or service does; these are the features and benefits; and this is the price. It’s a pretty cut and dried process—what you see is what you get. But in a soul-based business, your Unique Selling Position is your message—the inspirational and transformational value that people get from working with you or buying your products.

    Customers become part of a bigger movement which is not only improving and enriching their own lives, but it’s allowing them to make a massive impact in the world because their own improvement improves the lives of the people around them. By partnering with you—buying your products or services, they are making a difference in the world! They are no longer passive consumers, simply buying stuff they need, they are changemakers, and you’re the one facilitating that!

    As you go through this guidebook you’ll see how powerful these mindsets are in making your business more profitable, and how impactful the heart-centered approach is in making you more confident, more energetic, and more committed to being the absolute best version of you possible. Therefore, this book isn’t just about the nuts of bolts of entrepreneurship, it’s also about helping you step into your brilliance and really let your light shine so you can be the happy, purposeful, prosperous person you were born to be!

    The ART of Creating a Soul-Based Business

    As you go through each chapter in this book, you’re going to learn the specific strategies for getting started or growing your soul-based business, which is what I call the ART of business.

    And in this case, the A stands for Actions—the things you need to do to find customers, generate sales, and grow your business so it will sustain you and make the biggest impact possible.

    The R stands for Resources—finding the tools and systems and people you need to bring your business vision to life; and T is for Timing and Tactics—a guideline for what strategies to use and when to use them, so you stay focused on taking efficient actions that will keep you from getting overwhelmed and will keep you moving forward.

    This book is a step-by-step, done-for-you process that guides you logically through the different phases of either start-up or expansion, depending on whether you’re new to business or looking for ways to make your existing business more profitable. Each chapter gives you written plans or templates you can use to instantly implement the strategies you’ll be learning, so you’ll have an actual ‘how-to’ guide to keep you on track during and after you’ve finished reading the book.

    You’ll also find a handy 7-Step Business Start-Up Checklist at the end of this book if you’re still in the pre-launch phase, which will guide you through the process of getting your business planned out and set up for success.

    The entire purpose of this book is to make your entrepreneurial experience the easiest, most enjoyable process possible so that you’ll be comfortable and confident in your ability to make a good living by living your life’s purpose.

    I’m excited to help you along this life-changing journey and to see your brilliance shine through in your business. Now let’s get started.

    Chapter 2: Finding the Right Customers for Your Business

    In this chapter you’re going to discover how to find the right type of customers who will make your life purpose business more profitable and more gratifying for you when you serve them from a heart-centered place that benefits them by improving their lives while it prospers you as well.
