    Introduction

    The purpose of this series is to provide both laymen and clergy with a general understanding of just who Justin Martyr was and what he actually believed.

    In the preparation of this work, I have focused on the three documents in which there is a general consensus that they are genuine works of Justin Martyr. Though there are other documents that may have been written by him, I have not used them due to some valid arguments against their authenticity.

    Below is a list of the books I have most commonly cited and the abbreviations I will be using in this work to identify those books:

    The Trinity

    Though Justin did not ever use the word Trinity to define his understanding of God, it is clear that he believed in a Father, Son, and Spirit as three distinct persons.¹ All three of these persons were God. He clearly insisted that Christians worshipped and adored God the Father, his Son, and the prophetic Spirit, and that they knew them in reason and truth.² The them signifies a plurality or persons. Justin goes into great detail to insist that God the Father and God the Son are distinct.³

    Not only did Justin imply that the three were worthy of worship, but wrote:
