    Introduction

The purpose of this series is to provide both laymen and clergy with a general understanding of just who Justin Martyr was and what he actually believed.

In the preparation of this work, I have focused on the three documents in which there is a general consensus that they are genuine works of Justin Martyr. Though there are other documents that may have been written by him, I have not used them due to some valid arguments against their authenticity.

Below is a list of the books I have most commonly cited and the abbreviations I will be using in this work to identify those books:

    Dialogue with Trypho (Dialogue)

The First Apology of Justin (1 Apology)

The Second Apology of Justin (2 Apology)

    The Martyrdom of Justin (Martyrdom)

    The Genuine Christian

When examining the writings of Justin Martyr, we get an in-depth look into his definition of a true Christian. His letters also give us insight into the lifestyle of Christians in the second century.

He was made new and any bad habits or evil patterns of living were reformed in Christ; he was a changed man with a new outlook and purpose of life.¹ Justin describes the transformed Christian below:

... we who formerly delighted in fornication, but now embrace chastity alone; we who formerly used magical arts, dedicate ourselves to the good and unbegotten God; we who valued above all things the acquisition of wealth and possessions, now bring what we have
