    Introduction

    It is unfortunate for us today that much of the Church has lost the understanding of the true nature of man and the real significance of the salvation of the soul as conveyed to us in the biblical text. Instead, most of us have a clouded perception of man’s nature rather than a sound understanding of the truth. The cause of this distortion stems from the heavy influence of Greek philosophy upon the development of Christian theology in the beginning centuries of the church. Greek philosophical thought filtered into Church dogma as early as the second century and influenced interpretation of both the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament.

    With the subtle shift to Greek thought within the church, some Greek words of great theological significance in the Septuagint and the New Testament writings were often interpreted in light of their prevalent meaning in the Greek philosophy of the second century. This error has continued up until the present day.

    My objective in this book is to restore the biblical teaching on the nature of man, the intermediate state between death and judgment day, and the eternal destiny of both the saved and unsaved, as well as to expound the true characteristics of the soul as revealed to us in the Scriptures.

    The Threefold Nature of Man

    We as humans consist of body, soul and spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:23), and it is this trichotomy that is life for us as defined in Scripture. It is the failure to recognize this teaching of a threefold nature in the Holy Scriptures that has resulted in much misunderstanding and confusion on the true nature and eternal destiny of the human soul. Many of us often speak of soul and spirit interchangeably, as if they were one and the same, but they are not.
