- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5More or less typical Goddard novel. A bit more domestic and quotidian in its motive forces, which is actually a good thing.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5There are certain books that have to devote page after page to the bad guy explaining his actions in forensic detail, often in some kind of bizarre suspension of hostilities before the police roll up, so the protagonist gets to ask all kinds of "but why didn't you....." and "how did you...." questions to tie up all the plot holes the reader thinks he's spotted. This is one of them. That kind of thing always convinces me there's a gaping logic loop somewhere in the plot if only you take the time to investigate it under laboratory conditions. In the novel, actor Toby Flood goes on the trail of a strange guy who appears to be stalking his estranged wife. It subsequently appears that he is the one being pursued, rather than her, and by some very unsavoury characters. Much of the action relies on Toby's interest in getting back together with his wife, and given that she didn't come across as a particularly nice character, I found that element of it hard to swallow. It was competently written, and for the most part it kept the action coming. On the other hand, I found the title ironic, as it gave up its secrets earlier than I was expecting, leaving the end of the book a chore to complete.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5FABULOUS!!!! LOVED IT. Actor is called by soon to be ex wife because Derrick Oswin is stalking her. great story about plastic factory and cancer, and secret love and MURDER. Main character is an actor in London.,
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Oh dear. My favourite author has really gone off the boil. His worst yet. Though I suppose, given the high standard he set early on it's not surprising he can't always keep it up.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Play to the End is a story about an aging actor doing a winter week's run of a newly discovered Joe Orton play in Brighton. The story is peopled by stereotypical touring play type characters, but manages to bring a fresh thriller focus to the plot. Unusually for Goddard, all the action is concentrated on Brighton and in one short period of time.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The latest (as at May 04) in Robert Goddard's reliable annual output of excellently plotted mysteries. Play to the End is a story about an ageing actor doing a winter week's run of a Joe Orton play (newly discovered - nice touch) in Brighton. During his stay he becomes embroiled in a local intrigue that ends in serious blood-letting.Normally Goddard's stories are generously spread out in time and place, but here he departs from habit. Perhaps from an urge to observe the old theatrical unities (more or less), Goddard presents all the action in the period of a single week, and all in Brighton. While this device is enjoyable, it also tends to undermine a normally strong feature of Goddard's plots: the maintenance (if only just) of plausibility. In this book the pace of the plot seems to promise violence or death between every meal. But still a great read.
