I love this book I have been in the horse world my whole life and been a tech , I am a trainer full time now (though still struggling to grow) I related to ever story! This past fall my number one prize horse colic and I couldn’t get ahold of any vet that would come (around here if your not their client they won’t usually help) I had already given him IV banamine and was hand walking . Finally got a vet there not a regular horse vet just a large animal vet. He put oil and water in his stomach though I was hesitant, I thought are you sure I can load him up and head to the university… he said no he looks good it should just be a mild impaction. Turbo started to perk up and was trotting along following me in the arena . Vet said come back and give another dose of banamine and let me know how he is doing then, so I turned out my moms colt with him. Ran to get food and take my son home and come back to check him. I was gone less than a hour and came back to a sight I’ll never forget . He must have came in running and playing and bucked… and rupture he was laying there already huge bloated . I screamed so loud my mother heard me in the house over my dad ridiculously loud tv… most of the town heard I’m sure. I have seen a lot of things , put sent a lot of horses to heaven but he was strong and healthy and in peak performance…. This will sit with me forever . Now when I even hear the word I’m tearing up . I wish I would have followed my gut and taking him for surgery, but what if he would have died alone in the trailer … if I knew I would have never left him. I am still working horses and I have a bond with many , but his name plate still hangs on his stall and in my heart.
