This book series is not one I want to like but I'm committed and I want to know what happens to the protagonists. The reason I feel like it's not really my usual is that I think it's YA on about a 5th or 6th grade level. There's not a lot of nuance, the characters miss obvious things and there's a character used to voice things that would be obvious to an older reader. Also the narrator sounds like he's reading to young readers. Nevertheless as I said, it's pulled me in and I want to see what happens which I give credit to the writer for.

Like a 90s JRPG but without the game, the writing would work if it was the vehicle for a video game. Why? Because with a game you'd be focused on the hours of gameplay between scenes. You'd have a reason to forgive the paper think plot and the the stiff dialogue. You'd expect characters to get introduced a little ham fisted so that you can start playing. But your never get up play. You just keep getting more half hearted cut scenes. This doesn't work as a book at all I'm sorry to say.

I think that this series is either very brilliantly written or incredibly not. The word choice is very repetitive and unimaginative. The story is interesting thought.
