About this audiobook

Staff Sergeant Kyle “Reaver” Jacobs is a career Recon Marine - the best of the best. Operations behind enemy lines, search and rescue in the vacuum of space or the bombed-out ruins of urban war zones, forward reconnaissance of hostile territories - all part of their mission profile. Silent planets and treason are not, but that's what Reaver and his Marines are faced with now. If Reaver and Dragon Two-Zero are to survive this new phase of war they are going to have to rely on one another and get their newest team member up to speed or they could all end up simply more tags on the wall. "Some of the most well-rounded characters, regardless of sex, that I've read in years. I look forward to reading more from him!" - Laurell K. Hamilton, NY Times best selling author of the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series. "William McCaskey brings his own experiences as a veteran to the pages of this thrilling mil-sci fi debut!" - John G. Hartness, author of the Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter series.

If you spent any time in the Marine Corps, this book will grab you from the first chapter. Lots of battles both on the battlefield and in the ranks. Hopefully book 2 will be released.

This "book" is incredibly stale. The most glaring issue is that the book is written like a screenplay. The author spends 80% percent of the time describing the environment. It goes to far into detail by describing things like the movement of... feet... hands... jaws. It's just unnecessary. Most of the details explained do nothing to enhance the tone or mood of the scene, let alone the entire story. Furthermore, there's so much movement and procedure description going on that the story fails to build interesting characters and meaningful relationships. Just terrible. [Disclaimer: I stopped listening at chapter 7.]

I immensely appreciated the wealth of technical information cleverly woven into the fabric of this A-Z of set pieces and war games in what is a veritable master class in modern war fighting. Grab some uninterrupted quality time and let this book fully immerse you into elite soldier ‘Reaver’s’ hyper realistic, no frills battlefield of Dragon Two Zero’s marine recon, military science fiction.

Great story! The narrator ruined it because of the unnatural pauses at the end of every line of text as he was reading it, causing the incorrect tone or inflection. It made an interesting story hard to listen to.

Okay. Definitely very American and well narrated. But too heavy on the technobabble.

Good pacing, and descriptions. I may have missed how far in the future it is set but the references to Catholicism seemed outdated. Even with the financial returns corporations make on religion didn’t seem plausible except to maybe contrast the antagonist agents (china) non-religious society.
It’s basically capitalism and Christendom fights scientific socialists.

All in all characters were ok, again, this far into the future there is probably more homogenization but hey, I haven’t written anything so give it a read or listen. It’s entertaining.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s been a while since I got hold of a military space story so engaging! I liked the references to Earth cultures and the technical details about ships, military tech and ranks. Reaver and his marines have personalities and traits of their own that are endearing and fun - it will be really good to see these explored!
I think my only big criticism is that it kept the Western-good/Russia and China-bad kind of dichotomy. Maybe, as Reaver said, it’s because the antagonism between these ‘blocks’ have been there since WWI. Or it was a comfortable background since the whole story is so futuristic already.
    Anyway. Really enjoyed it.

Brilliant author and narrator, it made me think of my family and friends who've done tours in Afghanistan. Not all of them made it back. Thank you for showing the bravery and honor that our loved ones who serve deserve.

This is a difficult listen, especially when driving. While none of the material is the material is complex, it seems that 2/3 of the novel is simply describing the locations of mundane objects in the vicinity of the protagonist. The dialog is pretty good. The combat sequences are somewhat compelling. That said, but too much of the book is wrapped up with nonsense details.

Great book. Good characterization, author gives you the right information to let you feel like you are there. Don’t let the cheesy cover keep you from reading this book. I didn’t read this book for a long time because of the cover.

Detailed look at the life of a space marine, detailed on the equipment and tactics, that somehow never gets boring. Not a great work of literature, but better than most military sci-fi. Very well narrated

If you liked Chuck Norris in the movie Delta Force you'll like this.

The enemy are Commie clones and for SOF operators the heroes seem to end up with their enemies blood up to their elbows an awful lot.

There is a lot of blood... especially from the female military personnel when their uterus explodes.

The writing style is to link a lot of technical detail about the equipment with flowery prose. Don't worry about character development they'll die horribly before you have a chance to know them but basically they're all dedicated capitalists fighting and inept space communist villain, and they look cool doing it.

The technology level is all over the place with easy teleportation, ftl and cloning but communications and tactics straight out of the eighties.

I'm probably going to keep reading the series just to find out if there's a plot.

It's a good start for the series. The author has started a rather interesting story drawing upon his previous military background. The character development seems on pace and I anxiously await book 2.

If you are a fan of the Starship Troopers movie, or The Expanse TV series, you should like this books story line as I saw a lot of similarities.
