About this audiobook

From the acclaimed author of the Pierce Hunt series comes a thrilling novel featuring a Secret Service agent who takes on a ruthless foe to protect the country he serves and the woman he loves.

Former air force combat rescue officer Special Agent Clayton White now works for the Secret Service performing routine escort missions for politicians. These missions may not be quite as exciting as his time in the military, but Clayton’s okay with that. It gives him more time to see his girlfriend, Veronica Hammond—an archaeologist who also happens to be the vice president elect’s daughter.

But Clayton’s seemingly manageable new routine takes a startling turn when South African mercenaries target Veronica at an awards gala celebrating her work. After this attempt on Veronica’s life, Clayton enters a complicated web of lies, betrayal, and dangerous government secrets.

As Clayton gets closer to the truth, he encounters unexpected foes pitted against questionable allies. With enemies at every turn, the only constant Clayton can rely on is Veronica. But when the threat against her turns on him, too, he faces an impossible choice: love or country.

The Last Protector by Simon GervaisClayton White #1Action-packed political and military thriller that introduces Clayton White as the main character of a new series. With his military and secret service background he is capable, lethal, bright, and dedicated. I am not sure where his life will lead next as I am not 100% sure he will remain in the same line of work, but it should be interesting if his skills are called into service. What I liked: * Clayton: stalwart, strong, lethal, capable, loyal, honest, cares deeply for Veronica* Veronica: bright, tech savvy, archaeologist, in danger due to app she has developed* That Clayton and Veronica were friends that became more* That there is enough truth to make it believable* The setting(s)* The action scenes* That most of the bad guys were taken out* That the story made me think about a few uncomfortable issues* Pierre: a spy that saved the day* Wondering what the next book will be about * It was an okay introduction to a new series…will see how it goes in book two* That good eventually triumphed over evil…at least for awhileWhat I didn’t like: * Everything and everyone that I was meant not to like* The way powerful people could do the things they did and get away with them* Wondering how many corrupt crooked political and military individuals might actually exist and being doing horrible things in this world* I had more trouble getting into this book than the previous books and am not sure whyDid I enjoy this book? For the most partWould I read the next book in this series? I believe I wouldThank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC – This is my honest review. 3-4 Stars
