I enjoyed the world of the paper magician, but this story is much more captivating and the tension of the narrative is fantastic.

Sandis is the vessel for a demon, slave to a summoner. At the outset, Sandis has resolved to escape - but her plan is hazy and she almost immediately connects with Rone who is no one's idea of a hero-rescuer. Still, Sandis brings out hidden honor in Rone and as the story progresses, she even learns to use her power as a vessel to keep herself out of the hands of her pursuers. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Ms. Holmberg has created a new world of magical beings and the different perception of how creatures from smoke and fire are not all demons.
The dialogue is fresh and the actions are just as intense as The Paper Magician series!

I hate to do this, but I'm giving up on this book. I was really excited to get it through Kindle First, as Charlie is a local author and I've met her. She's really nice and I liked some of her previous books. But this one was a mess. I didn't care about the characters and I had no idea where the plot was going. It was just lots of running away and almost getting caught. Very boring. I feel like she always starts with a great idea for a plot, but the execution never lived up to that. Maybe her next book will be better.
