About this audiobook
As they did with the revised edition of YOU: The Owner’s Manual, Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz have updated their classic, international bestseller on diet. This nearly three million copy seller is filled with new information on emotional eating, the latest fad diets, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and over a hundred recipes.
For the first time in our history, scientists are uncovering astounding medical evidence about dieting—and why so many of us struggle with our weight and the size of our waists. Now researchers are unraveling biological secrets about such things as why you crave chocolate or gorge at buffets or store so much fat.
Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz, America’s most trusted doctor team and authors of the bestselling YOU series, are now translating this cutting-edge information to help you shave inches off your waist. They’re going to do it by giving you the best weapon against fat: knowledge. By understanding how your body’s fat-storing and fat-burning systems work, you’re going to learn how to crack the code on true and lifelong waist management.
Roizen and Oz will invigorate you with equal parts information, motivation, and change-your-life action to show you how your brain, stomach, hormones, muscles, heart, genetics, and stress levels all interact biologically to determine if your body is the size of a baseball bat or of a baseball stadium. In YOU: On a Diet, Roizen and Oz will redefine what a healthy figure is, then take you through an under-the-skin tour of the organs that influence your body’s size and its health. You’ll even be convinced that the key number to fixate on is not your weight, but your waist size, which best indicates the medical risks of storing too much fat.
Because the world has almost as many diet plans as it has e-mail spammers, you’d think that just about all of us would know everything there is to know about dieting, about fat, and about the reasons why our bellies have grown so large. YOU: On a Diet is much more than a diet plan or a series of instructions and guidelines or a faddish berries-only eating plan. It’s a complete manual for waist management. It will show you how to achieve and maintain an ideal and healthy body size by providing a lexicon according to which any weight-loss system can be explained. YOU: On a Diet will serve as the operating system that facilitates future evolution in our dieting software. After you learn about the biology of your body and the biology and psychology of fat, you’ll be given the YOU Diet and YOU Workout. Both are easy to learn, follow, and maintain. Following a two-week rebooting program will help you lose up to two inches from your waist right from the start.
With Roizen and Oz’s signature accessibility, wit, and humor, YOU: On a Diet—The Owner’s Manual for Waist Management will revolutionize the way you think about yourself and the food you consume, so that you’ll diet smart, not hard. Welcome to your body on a diet

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A couple times a year, I get on a "health and fitness" kick. This readable book provided great motivation. Rather than focusing on changes in weight and specialty foods, it provides realistic approaches to overall health and fitness. I like the idea of looking at changes in my measurements rather than weight as a single number. I was also encouraged by their practical tips related to calorie counting and food selection. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a practical guide to jump start a diet.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The basic premise of this book is that you can lose weight if you work with your body instead of trying to overpower it with deprivation and will power. More than that, once you become proficient in doing this, it will become automatic and you will never have to diet again. This claim is backed up with a lot of data, including how your body works, how fat works in your body and about body chemistry that affects weight gain or loss. Exercise is a key part of the plan. I found it quite convincing. Their attitude is pragmatic and understanding and the book should be helpful to anyone ready to hear it. As with their book, You: The Owner's Manual, I'm giving this 5 stars for content and 0 stars for incessant lame jokes and confusing drawings, averaging 3.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Filled with wonderful, helpful guidance, but constantly distracts the reader and detracts from the information with random jokes, abstract comparisons, and corny illustrations. The book would have half the pages without all the distractions, and I would have read it in half the time--and been less frustrated! I love their information, but I hesitate to read another book by them.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5More science than you would ever want to know about your digestive processes and how we lose and gain weight. In depth and balanced approach to weight loss. For those looking to lose a little weight to readers who may be struggling with serious obesity.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Put down that doughnut and read this book. If you ever wondered how food is processed once it enters you mouth, this book tells you more than you ever need to know. What exactly happens to that doughnut if you aren't burning it off every day by running a marathon? This book tells you. It will make you much more aware of everything that you put in your mouth.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is a great book. It is full of what seems to me to be solid scientific information. The authors break the information down into layman's terms and explain the importance of everything thoroughly. There were several corny jokes sprinkled throughout the book which may be distracting to some, but I personally found that it kept me interested and more involved with the reading. Without the jokes, this would probably have read like a text book. Great book! I feel much more informed and less intimidated after reading it.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed YOU: On a Diet for an interesting reason that may not be immediately apparent to those considering reading this "diet" book. I enjoyed it because the book reads like it's written for a 9th grader but simultaneously treats the reader as if they have more than two IQ points to rub together. Now that's not meant to be an insult to 9th graders. My point is that it's written in simple language that's entertaining to read but at the same time, the book teaches you complex concepts so that you understand the science behind why your body reacts the way it does to certain foods, why you get hungry when you do, and why excercise and certain types of foods improve or exacerbate your health concerns. The reader isn't treated to a "trust me, if you eliminate this food, all your woes will end" routine. You're treated as someone who wants to learn how your body works and how to improve your physiology. Some will be quick to dismiss the book as "sure, sure, it's the same old story - excercise 30 minutes a day and eat right." OK...and??? Of course it is. That's how you lose weight (or, more importantly, "waist" per the authors) and keep it off for the long haul. I applaud them for not creating some trendy fad diet. There are enough of those out there stealing people's money. For me, the book was a reinforcement of why I should cut out trans fats and high fructose corn syrup, why I should eat plenty of veggies and whole grains, and why I should make sure and give at least 30 minutes everyday to excercise my body. They don't just say I should - I knew that. They say WHY. That resonates with me. I compare it to the old adage - “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish and you have fed him for a lifetime.” Irrespective of whether or not I choose to follow the specifics of their recommended plan, I can now "fish" for myself. To my knowledge, there aren't too many diet books that can claim that. My impression has always been that they are prescriptive in nature and require a specific regimen.I have a much better understanding of the importance of eating well and getting some exercise. That's worth 4 stars to me. This is the best "diet" book I've read. Then again, I wouldn't call it a diet book. I'm also not a big diet trend follower/reader either so maybe I'm being overly critical of them - but I doubt it. I look forward to reading YOU: The Owner's Manual.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Filled with good scientific information, sometimes too much so. A little too cutesy with illustrations and cartoons. The eating plan and stretching/ strength training plan looks great though.
