About this audiobook
Jocelyn Minton is a woman torn between two worlds. Her mother grew up attending private schools and afternoon teas, but she married the local handyman. After her mother died when Joce was only five years old, her father remarried into his own class, and Joce became an outsider—until she met Edilean Harcourt. Although she was sixty years Joce's senior, Miss Edi was a kindred soul who understood her like no one else ever had.
When Miss Edi passes away, she leaves Joce all her worldly possessions, including an eighteenth-century house and a letter with clues to a mystery that began in 1941. In the letter, Miss Edi also mentions that she has found the perfect man for Joce—a handsome young lawyer. Joce is shocked to learn that the mystery, the house, and the future love of her life are all in Edilean, a small town in Virginia that Miss Edi never told her about. Hurt that the woman who meant so much to her kept so many secrets, Jocelyn moves to this tight-knit village in an attempt to understand the legacy that has been left to her. As she begins to dig into Miss Edi's mystery, she soon discovers some shocking surprises about her family's history and her own future—and she meets a man with his own mysterious past.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book started off a little slow but then picked up after chapter 8. It turned out to be a good read and I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Jocelyn Minton inherits a historic house she knew nothing about from an older woman who has become her mentor and family. She seeks a new life by moving to Edilean and in the process of unraveling a decades old mystery and discovers answers to her life and that of her mentor edilean Hartcourt.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Think I was given this as a Christmas or Birthday present, as I dont remember buying it myself.
Start of what looks like a series, a young woman is willed a house by the elderly woman who was her mentor. It introduces her to a large (and yet very small) community that seems to know everything before it happens and Ramsey the lawyer seems to have been earmarked as a potential suitor.
The story deals with her beginning to settle in, whilst trying to deal with Ramsey and her attraction to his cousin Luke. Meanwhile they start to dig into Miss Edi's past.
Lots of threads remain untied at the end of the book, possibly willing you to read the next book in the series. e.g. how did she get a $50,000 mortgage with no known income (ok, the house is large but was going to eat up the money).
And I was always taught: never introduce a new character or subject in the last quarter of the book. So why do we find out about Luke's other job in the last chapter? In the same chapter we've met Joce's grandfather for the first time? - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Got half way through and then got reading other books so will revisit later
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5My review
I like a little suspense with my romance, but this story goes beyond little white lies. A whole town keeping secrets. A woman seeking the truth finds only the lies underneath, and a romance that breaks all the rules. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I enjoyed it but found the "sub story" took me away from the main two characters abit. I wished there was a bit more spark between the hero/heroine, as that is what I have come to expect from Deveraux.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I liked this. But I did find it repetitive in spots. Enjoyable.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Great author and wonderful storyteller! Jocelyn is a woman torn between two worlds. Her mother grew up in a world of private schools and afternoon tea, but she married the local handyman. After her mother died when Joce was only five, her father remarried into his own class, and Joce was an outsider - until she met Edi, sixty years her senior, but a kindred soul. When Miss Edi dies, she leaves Jocelyn all her worldly possessions, which include clues to a mystery that began in 1941, set in a small town in Virginia that Joce has never heard of. But, because of her benefactor's notorious past, the townspeople know who Joce is, and they've plotted out her entire future, including who she is meant to marry. But Jocelyn has her own ideas about men -- and secrets that no one wants revealed.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5I got this whole series at a used bookstore and I was stoked to have all of them before starting, but I just couldn't get into this book, which makes me very sad. The dialogue didn't ring true. Maybe it was a Southern thing and since I didn't grow up in the south, it just felt fake to me, or maybe it just wasn't great writing. Either way, I couldn't make it father than about halfway through the book. Dang!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Mediocre romance. Her style would not have kept me reading but I was intrigued by how the plot would unfold. Okay if looking for a fast no-brainer.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5In a small town, everyone knows what everyone else is up to - but small towns are also very good at keeping secrets. When Edilean Harcourt dies, Jocelyn Minton inherits and a romantic triangle forms... secrets, lies, family scandals and sex. That's small town life, at least in Edilean, VA.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jude Deveraux never fails to please and Lavender Morning is no exception! A young woman who grows up torn between two worlds, her mother's that included afternoon teas and private schools, and her local handyman father's. Losing her mother at an early age, and gaining a step-mother and a couple of step-sisters (shades of Cinderella), she feels like an outsider. Enter Edilean Harcourt, sixty years older but a kindred soul who understands her. There we have the beginning of a beautiful friendship. That forms the basis of this story that includes a little bit of romance, a little mystery, a little humour and a lot of feel good! I can't wait to get started on the next one in this series!
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5A quiet, easy romance with a little touch of small town southern mystery and history. I had trouble with inconsisitencies in Joycelyns character and found Edi's back story more interesting. Still, a plesant enough read.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Good book. First in the Edilean series. I am looking forward to reading book #2.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I'm afraid that the oblique references to the mystery left me irritated rather than intrigued. Didn't like the characters. Didn't like the plot... didn't finish the book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Charming, fun and intriguing. Jocelyn never really felt as though she fit in with her father's new family, so when Miss Edi, an elderly neighbor extends a hesitant hand in friendship, Jocelyn feels right at home. Many years later, after Miss Edi's death, Jocelyn finds out that not only did Miss Edi leave her a mansion in a small town called Edilean, but she hid a huge secret about her experiences in World War II. Oh, and Miss Edi expects Jocelyn to marry a young lawyer in town. Or does she? This was so much fun! The characters are charming and winning, and though it takes a little while to get going, the story is intriguing and fun.I can't wait to hear more about the mystery surrounding Miss Edi!And the only reason the book didn't get a full 5 stars? Practically zero sexy time. : ( But I can overlook that in this case!Recommended.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5wonderful characters although there were a few too many names at first. Jocelyn lives with her dad and twin stepsisters who are rotten. She befriends Miss Edi and this old woman treats her kindly and lovingly until her death many yrs. later. She leaves Joselyn her old mansion in Edilean and in a letter suggests she marry a fine young man whom she names. So, will it be the lawyer Ramsey or the gardener Luke. What is the mystery behind Miss Edi and her long lost love? Good story.
