About this audiobook

When the woman you never got over shows up asking you to play her girlfriend for the holidays, that sounds like fun in an awkward, don't die-now-heart, kind of way. A lesbian romantic comedy with a side of fake relationships, small towns, and holiday love.

In college, Elizabeth Smile shared a magical tryst with her roommate, Michelle Harlow. She had no idea the night would leave Elizabeth pining after her for the next ten years. Now Michelle is back with a strange offer: Will she pretend to be Michelle's lesbian lover to beat Michelle's cheating husband?

Of course, it's a terrible idea. And it would mean leaving the New York nightlife behind and spending Christmas with Michelle's family in Ohio—an overly accepting father, a pill-popping brother, and a suspicious sister who seems to have her own agenda with Elizabeth.

Worst of all, it'll mean facing up to some old feelings she'd rather not revisit. But, really, she can handle all that. How hard can it be?
This twisty holiday romance is about getting more than we bargain for.

Contains mature themes.

Georgette Kaplan

It was never easy for Georgette Kaplan. She was born a poor child in Mississippi, where she still remembers sitting on the porch with her family, singing and dancing around her. After learning she was adopted, at the age of 21 she hitchhiked to St. Louis, where she worked at a gas station and in a traveling carnival. After a shooting incident at the gas station, she decided to quit and pursue her lifelong dream of a career in writing. She now lives back in Mississippi with her life partner Marie.

I usually like this narrator, but this book was really not for her: one voice and one tone for every single character.... Most of the times I could not follow who was speaking! The story is ok but sometimes it draged on an on with affectations... The epilogue was a saving grace. Might be better if read not listened to.

I was given this ARC by the publisher in exchange for an Honest Review.

Elizabeth works for Janet (from the previous book in the Scissor Link series, Scissor Link), and so along with an original story, we also get a bit more of Janet and Wendy as well (both of which I liked more in this book than in the last).

Elizabeth had a best friend in college, Michelle, and they intimately connected just once, but Elizabeth has had a crush of sorts on Michelle for a good portion of their friendship.

Michelle appears years later getting a divorce, but wanting to also have the marriage annuled so she won't lose half the money. So she convinces Elizabeth to be in a fake relationship with her for $25,000 (and also sorta old times sake).

Michelle takes Elizabeth home for a birthday/Christmas celebration her family has, and that's where the story really gets cooking.

I'm conflicted when it comes to this book. On the one hand I thought the plot was interesting, I also really liked some of the characters. Elizabeth grew on me, and I definitely liked Anne and Grady, two of Michelle's siblings.

And I will say that about halfway into the book I sorta guessed the big twist (I also thought that twist was good). But, on the other hand I also wanted to sorta have the whole book be more like the final chapter. Maybe I'm just too darn old or something, but, a lot of the dialogue, and even the inner dialogue just felt weird to my brain, and reading a lot of the book was sorta like having someone whispering Shakespeare in one ear while Nine Inch Nails is blasted in the other. I have no problem with either of those, but, at the same time, and with one given so much more precedence, it was a little painful to read in places.

I did get some of the massive number of pop culture references (movies, TV, music, etc.), but, I have no doubt that I missed a whole slew of others as well, and that was a little distracting.

Oh, and one big thing sorta annoyed me. Now, I've only ever pond skated in New England, never Ohio, so, perhaps it's different a little west, but, on my pond, there was no skating around it in circles like on an easy rink surface. Usually there was a hockey half and a free skate half, and as long as you weren't slamming into each other, you could go wherever you wanted, no skating around in circles like on the namby pamby indoor rinks.
