About this audiobook

"A five-alarm fire of a situation…the surprises keep coming." —The New York Times

Secrets, obsession and vengeance converge in this riveting thriller about an online dating match turned deadly cat-and-mouse game, from the New York Times bestselling author of Confessions on the 7:45

She met him through a dating app. An intriguing picture on a screen, a date at a downtown bar. What she thought might be just a quick hookup quickly became much more. She fell for him—hard. It happens sometimes, a powerful connection with a perfect stranger takes you by surprise. Could it be love?

But then, just as things were getting real, he stood her up. Then he disappeared—profiles deleted, phone disconnected. She was ghosted.

Maybe it was her fault. She shared too much, too fast. But isn't that always what women think—that they're the ones to blame? Soon she learns there were others. Girls who thought they were in love. Girls who later went missing. She had been looking for a connection, but now she's looking for answers. Chasing a digital trail into his dark past—and hers—she finds herself on a dangerous hunt. And she's not sure whether she's the predator—or the prey.

Don't miss The New Couple in 5B, Lisa Unger's newest psychological thriller about a couple that inherits an apartment with a truly chilling past.

Good story and worth the read but a slow burn.

Premise sounds good but I just can handle this narrator. Didn’t finish.

So utterly boring. I tried to like the story, but gave up on it before the halfway point.

3.5 stars rounded down. Narrator Wren Greenwood is a near-30’s single woman who has risen, phoenix-like, from the ashes of her deeply troubled childhood to build a successful life for herself as the anonymous advice columnist, Dear Birdie. She meets her putative soulmate on dating site Torch and embarks on a whirlwind romance until he (not a spoiler) ghosts her. Having experienced extreme trauma and loss in her own childhood, Wren has developed an intrepid and survivalist mentality, and starts to uncover her ex-flame’s past crimes, helped in part by an attractive PI, Bailey Kirk. I listened to the audiobook and the narration was excellent, as was the author’s ability to make Wren a highly sympathetic yet strong and admirable character. The interwoven stories of Wren’s childhood and of the other ghosted (missing) women, were artfully written. I was intrigued until about 80pct of the way through when the ending became somewhat predictable and the storyline dragged. Overall, I would rate this a 3.5 star read as it was well-written and captivating for the most part. The Author’s Confessions on the 7:45 has been on my TBR for over a year; after reading “Ghoste and seeing higher ratings for “Confessions”, I’m definitely looking forward to reading another of Ms Unger’s novels. Better written than Ruth Ware’s latest offerings IMO but not as character-driven or as fast-paced as Lisa Jewell’s work, amongst Thriller writers, but still very enjoyable.
