About this audiobook

A New York Public Library Best Book for Teens 2021

To save a fae kingdom, a trans witch must face his traumatic past and the royal fiancé he left behind.

In Asalin, fae rule and witches like Wyatt Croft…don’t. Wyatt’s betrothal to fae prince Emyr North was supposed to change that. But when Wyatt lost control of his magic one devastating night, he fled to the human world.

Now a coldly distant Emyr has hunted him down. Despite transgender Wyatt’s newfound identity and troubling past, Emyr claims they must marry now or risk losing the throne. Jaded, Wyatt strikes a deal with the enemy, hoping to escape Asalin forever. But as he gets to know Emyr again, Wyatt realizes the boy he once loved may still exist. And as the witches face worsening conditions, he must decide what’s more important—his people or his freedom.

Don’t miss the next book in H.E. Edgmon's highly anticipated duology, THE FAE KEEPER, AVAILABLE MAY 31, 2022

Editor's Note

A wealth of diversity…

An intricate YA fantasy where fae are the ruling class and witches are second-class citizens. Transgender witch Wyatt Croft wants to escape all the hate and bigotry he has to endure, but the fae prince Emyr, Wyatt’s betrothed, insists they still need to get married, even if Wyatt can’t have kids, as a political play. There’s a wealth of diversity in this story (Wyatt’s best friend, Briar, identifies as bi, asexual, Seminole, and Diné).

H.E. Edgmon

H.E. EDGMON was born in the Deep South but has had many homes, dropped out of school to do gay stuff, and is at least a little feral. In both their writing and daily life, they aim to center the voices of Indigenous people, trans people, and survivors of trauma. It is always their goal to make fascists uncomfortable. They have an eccentric little family of their own design, several very sensitive pets, and a lot of opinions. They can most often be found on Twitter, @heedgmon.

This is such a good book. Holy crap. This book raises the bar so much for good MLM + trans rep. (I am trans, and vouching for this.) Also the author is trans and Seminole and generally this just felt like good and genuine stuff. Some of the parts I love most are major spoilers so I won't get into it but if you're thinking "but aren't fairytale stories with monarchies kind of Done™️? How can this be progressive" ... without getting too far ahead of the horse... don't worry about it! Anyway ACAB!
