Dana Schwartz’s Anatomy: A Love Story is a gothic tale full of mystery and romance.
Hazel Sinnett is a lady who wants to be a surgeon more than she wants to marry.
Jack Currer is a resurrection man who’s just trying to survive in a city where it’s too easy to die.
When the two of them have a chance encounter outside the Edinburgh Anatomist’s Society, Hazel thinks nothing of it at first. But after she gets kicked out of renowned surgeon Dr. Beecham’s lectures for being the wrong gender, she realizes that her new acquaintance might be more helpful than she first thought. Because Hazel has made a deal with Dr. Beecham: if she can pass the medical examination on her own, Beecham will allow her to continue her medical career. Without official lessons, though, Hazel will need more than just her books—she’ll need corpses to study.
Lucky that she’s made the acquaintance of someone who digs them up for a living, then.
But Jack has his own problems: strange men have been seen skulking around cemeteries, his friends are disappearing off the streets, and the dreaded Roman Fever, which wiped out thousands a few years ago, is back with a vengeance. Nobody important cares—until Hazel.
Now, Hazel and Jack must work together to uncover the secrets buried not just in unmarked graves, but in the very heart of Edinburgh society.
Editor's Note
Full of cadavers…
Schwartz — who ran the satirical Twitter accounts @GuyInYourMFA and @DystopianYA and hosts the podcast “Noble Blood” — effortlessly blends her varying interests in this gothic, feminist love story full of cadavers. Hazel is determined to become a surgeon, and enlists the help of resurrection man Jack, as they both try to survive and stop the Roman Plague. A Reese Witherspoon book club pick for fans of the macabre and My Chemical Romance.

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a fine book with engaging characters and a brilliantly narrated story. While some found the beginning slow and the ending disappointing, others enjoyed the historical Gothic tale and Hazel's determination to become a surgeon. The book is recommended for a wider audience, despite being classified as YA. Overall, it is an entertaining and unique story with some predictable and trope-ridden elements.

First, I don’t know if my app had a problem or if the audiobook was just poorly edited, but some chapters(quite a lot actually) began at the middle of a track, some paragraphs were completely cut out… the audiobook experience was not pleasant at all !
As for the content of the book, I was expected a bit more, considering all the hype that book got. It was still an entertaining story. I was surprised by the end.2 people found this helpful

This was one of the most absurd books I’ve ever read. There were so many unlikely things. I won’t mention them because I don’t want to be one of those jerks who writes a review with spoilers. I’m all for suspending disbelief for fiction; but for that to be done, the author needs to provide some strong rope from which to suspend your disbelief. The author did not. At least we had a real good laugh over it at book club. The narrators were good, the book was beyond bad. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

I loved the history woven into this story and Hazel's determination to become a doctor/surgeon despite it being looked down upon. Can't wait to read the second book! - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5

That's it?! No board of physicians exam? No revenge on the monstrous surgeon? what of Hazzeles parent's reaction to what she had done with their house?
This book reminded me of Aurora Leigh's story; thankfully the female character didn't marry her cousin but I can't tell if she completely fulfilled her ambitions.
the first part of the book was rather slow and then there were parts of the story that needed more details/explanations in the second half.
Overall it is a fine book but I was tempted to DNF it when I started it... give it some time=) - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5

So at first the book starts off slow then it picks up about halfway through into the book. I enjoyed Hazel and her passion in wanting to be a surgeon. This book was a historical Gothic tale of a female/male version mash up of Frankenstein with a twist in my opinion with some romance thrown up in the mix. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5

Sadly this audiobook version was glitching the entire time, with large chunks of the story missing. This made for a very disorienting listening experience.
The story itself was not bad, but I found the ending quite disappointing. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

A book a bit different from what I'm used to reading, but upon seeing that it was historical fiction, I delved in.
This book is set in the 1800s in the city of Edinburgh, where we meet the protagonist Hazel, a young woman whose entire life is already planned out by her family, but what she wants is to become a doctor. Something totally unthinkable in those times, where it was not acceptable for women to aspire to professions, especially one as harsh as being a doctor or surgeon.
Despite all these obstacles, we see how the protagonist carves her own path to learning, and in that process, she meets the other important character in the story: Jack. (I love you, Jack).
This is not just a romance book, but it weaves together a lot of things that really surprised me, a bit of fantasy and a mystery to solve that makes the second half of the book super addictive and hard to put down.
The author writes beautifully, and I really want to read the second book soon. ? (Translated from Spanish)
