About this series
Once, there was power in her magick. Now, she must find magick in her power.
Claire Emerson has lost her magick—and with it, her place among the Crones. It should spell the end of her involvement in their centuries-old war against the dark god, Morok, but it can’t. Because Claire knows something the others don’t—Morok has become an imposter in the Crones’ midst, and their destruction is imminent.
To stop the dark god’s nefarious plan, Claire will have to find her missing powers. But neither she nor her allies have a clue where to start—and that’s the easy part. The hard part? Getting past Morok’s monsters in time to rescue the Crones. Especially when she comes face to face with Morok himself.
Will Claire’s powers be enough to defeat a god and save her companions—and the world?

1
She wanted purpose. She found dark magick and war. For Claire Emerson, there is nothing ordinary about turning sixty. First, there are the crows. Then, a pendant that unlocks a gate to a house in the woods--which comes with a snarky gargoyle, an entirely too-sexy wolf shifter claiming to be Claire's protector, and a legacy that turns her reality upside down. Because divorced, menopausal grandmothers with creaky hips and hot flashes? They don't just randomly discover they're next in a long line of powerful women protecting the world from the dark magick of Mages. Claire's first instinct is to turn tail and run back to the safety of baking cookies and reading bedtime stories. But when it becomes clear the Mages have targeted her, she may have no choice but to accept her calling. There's just one problem: she never got the lifetime of training she was supposed to have, and her magick is... well, unreliable would be an understatement. With the Mages threatening everything she loves, can Claire learn what she needs to in time to become Crone? Or will she be the one to lose an ancient war—and her life?
- A Gathering of Crones
2
She’s running out of time. And so is the world. After learning on her sixtieth birthday that she’s one of five Crones destined to save the world, Claire Emerson has been desperately trying to acquire the lifetime of magic she missed out on. But the mages who are out to destroy everything she loves aren’t waiting, and when one of the other Crones ends up on Claire’s doorstep—wounded and unconscious—Claire knows she’s out of time. Leaving the safety of her warded house, she goes in search of the remaining Crones… only to find them under siege by the mages and their nearly indestructible monster. And without control over her powerful elemental magic, she has no idea how to rescue them. Can Claire harness her powers in time to help her fellow Crones defeat the mages—or will her efforts bring even greater disaster?

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5The main character’s incessant whining from the first book to the second and then most of this last one was cringeworthy! It isn’t until almost the end of the book that she FINALLY engages courage and stands up for herself. I purposely trudged through them to see if she would ever stop being a hypocrite (she tried standing up to her bully son - sorry, but in MY culture in the Caribbean he would have gotten a broomstick ‘cross his backside…grown man or not!).
The character complains about her age being a deterrent to having acquired certain powers. Okay, I am one year older than her (and permanently physically disabled) and get the validity of all that happen to her. But even when she does make progress, she comes up with more to complain about! And this continues throughout all the books.
This is simply MY perspective, of course.
The narrator stumbles over the lines in several places which threw the meaning of sentences off. Her reading seemed a bit amateurish.
Not going to recommend either one. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I really liked the 2 books. Hopefully there will be a third one to complete the series.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Clare has to be the worst main character ever. It was depressing listening to this book and the fact that she never gets a clue, doesn’t tell anyone when she’s having problems. And why are the mages all of a sudden so powerful that they’re breaking the wards that couldn’t be broken for thousands of years. The way these books are written the Mages could’ve had the crones wrapped up long ago.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I have never ever shouted so loudly at a book ending as I did with this one. This story is beautiful and worth the read/listen.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I'm not understanding the complaints about the ending. I thought it was a great stopping point! Clearly a bridge to the next book.
The narrator really brings it to life.
I enjoyed it...them...very much. ? - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I hated the cold shoulder and shade thrown in this book but it was still a good listen!
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5There are more books to this series unavailable as audiobooks. I have vision disability and hate this continuation is unavailable. Very cruel.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I love that it was based on a group of all powerful, older women, and the characters were interesting. There were a number of plot twist which kept my attention, and it ended in the suspenseful way. I can’t wait for the next book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great story, interesting characters that are relatable. Interesting world and Magiks! Eagerly looking forward to the next installment!
