Description
Welcome to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.
This is ONLY the APPLICATION OF YONISO MANASIKARA OF THE FIVE AGGREGATES SUBJECT TO CLINGING AS 11 CHARACTERISTICS from the Vesak Poya Dhamma Session, conducted via zoom on 26 May 2021.
**Please note - each contemplation is a gradual and sequential development of yoniso manasikara, therefore you may wish to do the meditations or contemplations in sequence.
For the full 3.5hr session (including contemplations) you can listen to episode 103 WHY YONISO MANASIKARA IS ESSENTIAL TO THE NOBLE EIGHTFOLD PATH (Vesak Poya FULL Dhamma Session)
In this segment from the Vesak Poya Dhamma Session, we examine the teachings given as a Q&A between Venerable MahaKotthita and Venerable Sariputta on:
yoniso manasikara - how to wisely contemplate and direct the mind towards the five aggregates, cling to them as 11 characteristics
ayoniso manasikara - how we misapprehend (unwisely contemplate) and direct the mind towards the five aggregates, cling to them as the opposing 11 characteristics
briefly go through each of the 11 characteristics
highlight importance of meditating on 5 x 11 = 55 contemplations (not easy, but very powerful given that this contemplation is advised for the virtuous, learned, stream-enterer, once-returner, non-returner and even the arahant)
how this contemplation bears fruit for those that diligently develop and frequently practice it
additional shorter meditation instruction - Taking to the mind the fact that we are born and subject to old age, sickness and death... you contemplate (yourself or someone else) - "If it is impermanent (anicca), suffering (dukkha) and, subject to change (viparinama), is it worth taking as mine?".
The main suttas supporting this contemplation:
— Sīlavanta Sutta (SN 22.122)
— Sutavanta Sutta (SN 22.123)
— Palokadhamma Sutta (SN 35.84)
— Mahāmālukya Sutta (MN 64)
— Dīghanakha Sutta (MN 74)
— Dutiyanānākaraṇa Sutta (AN 4.124)
— Dutiyamettā Sutta (AN 4.126)
— Jhāna Sutta (AN 9.36)
A VIDEO of this segment has been published to the Sutta Meditation Series YoutTube Channel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEkgUd2wjFc
***Extended talk on the Sīlavanta Sutta (SN 22.122) has recently been published - see episode 113***
