Description
Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.
In this Dhamma session, we examine the Vammika Sutta (MN 23) and how to contemplate the riddle given to Venerable Kumārakassapa and the teaching he received from the Buddha, which eventually culminated in this noble disciple of the Buddha realising nibbāna.
It's a powerful teaching and we will be drawing on some of the meditations we have practised before. These earlier sessions are helpful as pre-requisites to this meditation:
— Exposition of the Elements - Part 1 (https://tinyurl.com/38jeuxe5)
— Q&A on how to contemplate the elements (https://tinyurl.com/4fea3s6j)
— Arising and passing away of the five aggregates (https://tinyurl.com/43ardjy4)
— Understanding the simile of the fruits on a tree in the Potaliya Sutta (https://tinyurl.com/s4hv8kwr)
— The medicine for the five hindrances (https://tinyurl.com/bdhvpmf2)
In this session we look at:
— Overview of the Vammika Sutta (MN 23)
— Who is Venerable Kumārakassapa?
— The deity’s riddle for Venerable Kumārakassapa
— “Deep dive” into the Buddha’s explanation of how to understand the meaning the deity’s riddle
— Summary of how to contemplate the Buddha’s words towards complete liberation

— Mahāsamaya Sutta (DN 20)
