Description
Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.
We continue with our examination of "all sentient beings are sustained by nutriment" (sabbe sattā āhāraṭṭhitikā) in the Saṅgīti Sutta (DN 33) In this session (PART 5), we will examine the Fourth Unprofitable Direction how we go the Wrong Way due to Delusion (mohaagatigamanaṃ) when we crave Consciousness as Nutriment (viññānāhāro).
All the nutriments are linked, so we build on what we covered in the session on the Physical Nutriment and Going the Wrong Way due to Desire, Contact as Nutriment and Going the Wrong Way due to Hate and Mental Volition as Nutriment and Going the Wrong Way due to Fear.
What we cover in this session:
— look at how craving for Consciousness as Nutriment activates dependent origination
— highlight the importance of understanding name-and-form
— go line by line to understand the process of how we go the wrong way due to delusion driven by ignorance and supported by the perversions
— examine how volitional formations get constructed, they shatter, and we continually lament when we don't get what we want. And this demonstrates the relationship between volitional formations and consciousness.
— apply the "swinging monkey" analogy to understand this Dhamma
— revisit the Buddha's simile of the criminal being punished by the king
— go through some examples of this process
— tips for learning and developing this meditation
