Description
Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.
The title of this Dhamma Session is "All the Feels" and focuses on the Buddha's teaching on feeling or experience (vedanā). We study the Salla Sutta (SN 36.6) as well as other supporting suttas.
The question that is often asked is around "why does the Buddha and the noble disciples constantly talk about bearing with conditions?"; or "how can we not be shaken by difficult conditions?" We seek to find some answers in the Buddha's teachings on feeling (vedanā) and drawing on some of what we have learned in our earlier sessions.
In this session we look at:
— the importance of not responding to feeling (any of the three kinds of feeling) by going through the Salla Sutta
— revisit the Buddha's teachings on objects, contact and feeling, which all result in suffering (or dukkha)
— highlight the underlying tendencies that lie behind the three kinds of feeling
— discuss the reflection of feeling as a "water bubble"
— link in the 2nd Unprofitable Direction - Contact as Nutriment and the Buddha's simile of a flayed cow
— bring this back to dependent origination
— lay the groundwork for future sessions on the 2nd Profitable Direction or Doorway to Nibbana (Painful Practice with Quick Realisation) and the Bases of Spiritual Power (iddhipāda)
Suttas that are mentioned directly or indirectly in this session:
— Suttavebhaṅgiya (Pe 9)
— Ādittapariyāya Sutta (SN 35.28)
— Pahāna Sutta (SN 36.3)
— Puttamaṁsa Sutta (SN 12.63)
— Samādhi-bhāvana Sutta (SN 22.5)
— Saṅgīti Sutta (DN 33)
— Pātāla Sutta (SN 36.4)
— Pheṇapiṇḍūpama Sutta (SN 36.6)
— Phassamūlaka Sutta (SN 36.10)
— Anicca Sutta (SN 36.9)
Bohoma pin to the people who asked questions that were the basis for this Dhamma talk.
