Description
Women’s Health, Wisdom, and. . . WINE! is a weekly conversation with practitioners, providers, patients, and healers about complex reproductive medicine and women’s health challenges, the value of an integrative approach to these challenges, many of the women’s health topics you’re already thinking about but uncomfortable talking about, and my personal favorite. . . WINE!July officially marks the beginning of Fibroid Awareness Month and July 1 is National Wear White Day—a day to show support of all women suffering from fibroids. The goal of this observance is to bring awareness to a common yet under discussed health issue affecting 20 percent to 80 percent of women by the time they reach age 50.Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that grow in the uterus of women of childbearing age. They are more common in Black than White, Hispanic, or Asian women and the cause of fibroids are multifactorial, ranging from nature (genetics) to nurture (lifestyle factors). While most (small) fibroids do not cause any symptoms, common symptoms of uterine fibroids include abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, enlargement of the lower abdomen (bloating and the look of pregnancy), frequent urination (due to pressure on the bladder), complications with pregnancy, reproductive problems (fertility challenges) and more. Fibroids typically resolve after menopause; however, they are a leading reason for hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus) in the United States when they cause severe symptoms.
