CHAPTER 1

Bev looked at herself in the mirror and cringed as she saw her increasing waistline. She wasn’t thin anymore and she seemed to be packing on weight. Middle age seemed to have taken hold of her. Maybe even that dreaded menopause women experienced. But was it possible at the age of thirty? Was that at all possible? She sat in front of her dressing table and put on her earrings. She stood up and smiled. What she wore would have to do.

Lance walked in to the bedroom and looked at her. You look lovely! Ready to go out for supper?

I am. Lance, has the babysitter arrived?

She has and the children are watching telly. They walked out of their bedroom to the lounge. Mom and I are on our way.

James and Samantha stood up as Bev walked in to the lounge. Oh, Mom! You look gorgeous! Samantha squealed.

Thank you for the lovely compliment. Be good tonight, and listen to Cynthia. Don’t be too late. Cynthia, we will be at the pub for a meal but we won’t be late.

No problem Mrs Benson. Happy birthday, Cynthia almost sang. Bev smiled as she hugged her and kissed the children and they walked out of the house. Lance had always been very caring and helped her in to the van, as he always did. He hadn’t changed through the years. They were almost ready to leave and he handed her a gift box.

Bev sighed as she looked at the box. Thank you, Lance. This must be the first time we are ever going out on my birthday. She opened the box then took the solid gold bracelet and slipped it straight onto her wrist. Lance, this is beautiful! Thank you!

Sorry about going down to the pub but I don’t fancy the hotel. The food at the pub is rather tasty.

I am not complaining, Lance. What a treat. And we even have a babysitter. Today is a special day.

Lance smiled as they drove along and found a space to park in front of the pub. They climbed out of the van and held hands as they walked up the stairs. Janice smiled as they walked in to the pub. Oh, you look lovely, Bev! Is tonight a special night?
