About this ebook

A relationship is considered abusive when one party negatively exercises power and control over the other. This might be financial, verbal, emotional, physical, or any other kind of behavior that maintains one person in the grip of another.

More precisely, believing that you deserve your partner's abuse and supporting your partner's abusive actions are examples of abusive relationships. It's critical to keep in mind that you do not deserve to be mistreated and that it is not your fault if you find yourself in an abusive relationship.

    Recognizing the signs of abuse

    ––––––––

An abusive relationship is defined as a relationship where one person exerts power and control over the other in a negative way. This can take many forms, including physical, emotional, verbal, financial, or any other type of behavior that keeps one person under the control of another.

In more specific terms, an abusive relationship might include feelings that you deserve the mistreatment from your partner and justifying your partner’s abusive behaviors. It’s important to remember that if you find yourself in an abusive relationship, it is not your fault and you do not deserve to be treated poorly.

It’s crucial to understand that abuse can be subtle and not always physical. It can also be emotional, where the abuser uses words and actions to belittle, isolate, or control the other person. This can lead to feelings of being unsupported, misunderstood, demeaned, or attacked

Abuse in a relationship can transgress the right of citizens to be free from violence. It can involve a pattern of behavior that creates fear and control, and such mistreatment can occur in a range of interpersonal contexts.

The dynamics of abusive relationships in South Africa are deeply concerning, with the country bearing the unwanted title of rape capital of the world due to high rates of gender-based violence. Statistics indicate that between 25% and 40% of South African women have experienced sexual and/or physical intimate partner violence in their lifetime.

It’s important to note that any controlling or abusive behavior that causes harm or threatens the safety, health, or well-being of an individual is considered abuse. The person abusing you can be anyone you have a domestic relationship with by blood, marriage, or adoption.
