30 Minute Romance - Reunion of the Heart - Tabatha Rose

    Reunion of the Heart

    Chapter 1:

The night air was cool and crisp, carrying with it the faint scent of autumn leaves and bonfire smoke. The high school gymnasium was alive with chatter and laughter, as classmates of all ages mingled and caught up on lost time.

Amy Thomas, now in her early thirties, stood alone by the punch table, idly watching the reunion unfold. She had moved across the country after college, landing a job in New York City, and hadn't been back to her home town in years.

She'd never missed it much, but something about tonight felt different. Across the room, she spotted Troy Wilson, her oldest friend. He looked just as she remembered him, tall and lanky with a mop of curly hair that was starting to gray at the temples. They'd stayed in touch through occasional letters and the occasional phone call, but their lives had grown so separate that it felt like they were strangers. Still, there was an undeniable spark between them whenever they were in the same room.

As Amy made her way across the room, the memories flooded back. The night they'd snuck out of their friend's sleepover to go see a midnight showing of The Princess Bride. The summer they'd worked at the local amusement park and saved up for a trip to Disney World. The countless hours they'd spent laughing and dreaming about their futures.

It all seemed so long ago. Amy!  Troy exclaimed, wrapping her in a hug that nearly lifted her off the ground. It's so good to see you! You too, Troy, she said, returning the embrace. It's been far too long. They stood there, catching up for a moment, both not wanting to let go of the other.

Finally, they reluctantly pulled apart and began to talk, their voices low and intimate amidst the bustle of the reunion. Amy told Troy about her job in the city, about the apartment she'd moved
