THE HAUNTING OF THE RIGHT SIDE OF THOMAS DUFFY
Thomas Duffy was driving home from finally signing his divorce papers when a fox ran in front of his car. Later, Thomas would remember the animal’s headlight-brightened eyes, the last two stars in the universe after all the others had died. It was the last time Thomas would see two sides of anything, outside of his dreams.
He veered away from the fox, into the shallow ravine that ran alongside the road, and the crash against an oak broke his arms, legs and pelvis. But in the end the only injury that mattered was the dent in the right parietal lobe of his brain. He woke in the hospital wondering who had placed the extra arm in his bed. Later that night, a nurse mentioned that the arm belonged to him.
Thomas had lost his port side, explained a doctor who had only one eye and half a mouth. Or rather, Thomas had lost his ability to perceive anything to his left, including the left side
