It had happened again. Amy just could not believe it. She could not understand how it could have happened again. Someone kept breaking into her cottage. Why would anybody keep doing that, after all, she did not have much worth stealing. This time she had come down the stairs and gone into the sitting room to find two dirty coffee mugs on the table and an ashtray filled with cigarette ends. Amy did not smoke, she thought it was a dirty habit. Whoever it was had no respect. She just could not understand it. At times like this she wished her home was not five miles away from the nearest village and the same distance from any other neighbour. Amy had tried to telephone the police on a number of occasions but the telephone was just not working properly- she always got through and she could hear them but they did not seem able to hear her at the other end. She had considered driving down to the police station but someone had moved her car from the drive. Amy felt trapped. What did they want? She went into the kitchen and found the sink to be full of dirty dishes. Were they eating her food as well? Amy could not comprehend how they kept getting in or why. She was sure that she locked all the doors and windows but nothing seemed to stop them. Amy realized that some of her ornaments had been moved! What a nerve these people had she thought as she put them back in their places.
This had been going on for weeks now. Amy could not fathom out who would want to torment her in such a way. She could not think of anyone who would do such a cruel thing. But the strangest thing to Amy's mind was that she had never seen or heard them. Amy went back up the stairs and went to her bedroom.
After about an hour Amy heard voices coming from downstairs in the sitting room. It was the first time that she had actually heard anyone else in the cottage. Apprehensively she made her way down the stairs. Now she could see the interlopers who came into her home. There were three of them, two women and a man seated at the round dining table. She recognized the man and the younger woman but not the older woman that was with them.
'Amy, Amy, can you hear me Amy,' the older woman called out to her, 'we have to talk to you.'
'Why are you in my home?' Amy said with her voice shaking, 'why won't you leave me alone?'
'But Amy, this isn't your home anymore,' The woman said firmly, 'You're dead.'
'I'm not dead,' Amy said shocked that anyone would lie like that, 'I'm not dead and this is still my cottage and I want you all to get out!'
'Amy, I am very sorry but you died after you suffered a heart attack,' the woman said, 'you have to leave because it's their home now and I can help you move on if you'll only let me.'
Suddenly Amy remembered the searing pain that she had felt in her chest and down her left arm. Was that a heart attack? Amy was distraught.
'It's alright Amy,' the woman said calmly, 'I know it's hard to take in but can you see a beautiful white light?'
Amy looked around and saw what the woman was describing. It was a pillar of brilliant white light. It was so beautiful and intense.
'You must go into the light Amy,' the woman said, 'it will take you where you are supposed to be.'
Amy looked once again at the bright light and went to walk towards it. Suddenly she stopped and turned around to face the people sitting around the table.
'No,' Amy said with conviction, 'this is my home and I'm not leaving it so you can all get out.'
One thing was for sure Amy was not going anywhere and she resolved to make the new occupants life a misery until they left her beloved cottage. After all, Amy had never really liked her son much and she absolutely hated her daughter-in-law who were still sitting
