TILL MY CHANGE COMES - Hadjet Gbolabo Oso

    CHAPTER 1

    TIME

To everything there is a season , and a time to every purpose under the heaven Ecclesiastes 3;1 AMPC

Life is about times and seasons.

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom (Psalm 90:12).

Here, the Psalmist is not talking about counting our days arithmetically; he is actually admonishing us to be conscious of the brevity of our stay on earth. This is a bitter pill to swallow for most humans. When compared to eternity, our time on this side is quite short, regardless of how long we live.

It is noteworthy that God created time, but He is not bound by time. God is infinite, so His existence is perpetual. Man, by contrast, is finite; his existence is temporal. God made time to give a flow and rhythm to life. Imagine how life would be without a rhythm: everything would be boring because things would become repetitious.

Having said that, a man’s days on earth can be divided into three: DAYBREAK, SUNRISE, and SUNSET.

Daybreak is the time of infancy. This is a time when you are being taken care of. As such, some people like your parents, older siblings, relatives, teachers, etc. are pretty much responsible for your welfare. Decisions are being taken on your behalf. Thus, we can safely say that, at this season or time of life, you are dependent on people’s help.

Sunrise is the time of youth to middle age. By implication, you start to take care of yourself; and, eventually, you begin to take care of other people. The time of youth is the time when vigor is still very much present. But, as time goes on, it begins to dwindle as you gradually approach sunset.

Sunset is the evening time; that is, it is the time of old age. This is a time when there is no more strength; at this stage of life, you are living one day at a time and are thankful for every day you get to wake up and see the sunrise. It’s a time when death is imminent.

With all of this in mind, there is no denying that time is life, and life is about time. Time, they always say, waits for no man. This is absolutely correct! No man, born of a woman, can hold time or put the clock back. Therefore, once time is lost, the quest to redeem it will always take a concerted effort.

We should note that God determines time; hence, everything that had been in the past, the things that are in existence now, and even the things that have yet to be in existence have all been predetermined by the Almighty God. The duration of their existence has been appointed by God. Job and King David rightly put it when they said these:

A person’s days are determined; you (God) have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed (Job 14:5).

My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me (Psalm 31:15).

These are proof that the Almighty God is the Custodian of time.

The book of Ecclesiastes explains times and seasons in a profound way. The preacher makes us understand that nothing lasts forever, even though we sometimes live our lives as if anything is permanent. When a man truly understands that nothing lasts forever and applies this understanding through wisdom, he starts living a purposeful life. There is, therefore, no gainsaying that time is the essence of life!

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, says, For everything there is a season, A time for every activity under the sun...

This is a pointer to the ultimate authority of the Most High God in heaven and on earth. Furthermore, we can deduce from this Scripture that there are seasons in our lives when we experience difficulties. At such times, we may not understand what God is doing, yet it is our responsibility to trust the God whose thoughts towards us are always good. The good, the bad and the ugly seasons are all wrapped up in time. And we must experience portions of them for the strengthening of our faith and our maturity on this narrow path that we are all
