Japanese culture boasts a rich history of rope use in various contexts. Traditionally, rope played a role in sacred rituals and was also employed in martial arts, specifically Hojojutsu, for restraining defeated adversaries or criminals. The complexity of the ties varied greatly, often reflecting one's social standing and how well respected you are as a person. Shibari, the focus of this book, represents a more contemporary adaptation of rope art, primarily in an erotic context. While it likely draws inspiration from Hojojutsu, that is where the similarities end. Images of rope bondage first emerged in Japan in the 1920s and later became a staple in the adult magazine 'Kitan Club.'
