Chapter One
By the age of 29, Turtle had been dealt with some nasty crap, but she was bound to make the best of her situation. Setting up a workshop, sort of like Santa’s she supposed, Turtle fixed and rebuffed old toys, selling them, and sometimes donating them, to children in hospitals around her, especially the one for childhood cancer.
She held out the old the 1950’s toy solider she had found, smiling at the final result. This one she would give to the little boy in the cancer wing she had met last week. With Christmas only a few days away, it sucked for any of the children to be stuck there, but this little one had touched her heart in so many ways.
Not only did Bret Henderson have cancer, but he had also been scared by his biological parents. This didn’t stop the eight-year-old from being an angel in her book. Being a ward of the state, Bret would have been alone on Christmas again, but not this year.
She looked at the calendar and sighed. It had been six months since she had applied to adopt the little boy, but with her status as a single woman living alone, Turtle didn’t know if Bret would be hers or not. That didn’t mean she would let him be alone on Christmas.
Sure would be nice to have a few of you hunky alpha toy soldiers around to help, maybe even be a daddy to Bret if I get him,
she whispered, putting the toy soldier down near the other toys and some needed clothes she had gotten for Bret.
