The Truth - Charles Makepeace
CHAPTER 1
God: Who or What?
We welcome you to take a journey with us as we explore new perspectives and profound insights into our human condition and as we establish, strengthen, and reinvigorate our relationship with ourselves and our Creator, God.
If we have a conversation with someone, we can learn about who they are, their likes and dislikes. We can learn about their opinions and how they perceive this life. We can learn as much or as little as someone is willing to share. Of course, most of us aren’t going to bring up the bad within ourselves. We usually only share the good, the interesting facts about ourselves. Yet I’ve been alive long enough to know we all have both attributes. We all have good inside us, and we all have bad as well. How do I know this? Experience. I’ve seen how people can be such good actors. And I’ve also lived with myself my whole life. I’ve seen myself do some amazingly awesome stuff and, on the flip side, some stuff that makes me say, What on earth was I thinking?
I know that how we act depends on what company we’re in. And I know me. I’ve learned how to listen to myself and control myself when I need discipline. And, most importantly, I do me. I don’t pretend to be someone or something I’m not. I don’t follow trends or flavors of the week. I try to be friendly and put out a good vibe; I love myself, and I keep a forgiving attitude with myself. I make mistakes, but I don’t dwell too long on my errors. I learn from them and try my best to move forward. I could go on and on, but I’m not writing this to tell anyone about me—I’m trying to set the stage for our Creator, who refers to himself as God.
God has given us the Bible, which, in context, is really just a bunch of stories, but they tell us who our Creator is and what he’s all about. Anything and everything that pertains to our existence can be found in the Bible; all we have to do is look. The Bible tells us who we are. It tells us who our Creator is. All we have to go by is what the Bible tells us. The fact that our Creator gave us the Bible in the first place tells us what he’s about: love. This one word sums up the character of our creator. If God didn’t care about us, like so many believe, he wouldn’t have given us a playbook on how to do this thing called life. We have such a hard time grasping the one thing that God is. The concept of love is not as cut-and-dry as we would like to think it is. Believe it or not, we as humans are not as smart as we think we are. We are definitely talented when it comes to using our brains, but even the smartest of us have to exercise it and put it to good use.
Our Creator is love in his very being. Not a form of it, not a part of it—it is who he is. We think we know what love is, but we only float on the surface of that wide, open ocean. The Bible and all its stories tell us of an all-powerful Creator of the universe. There are instances when God himself talks to mankind, and that’s the greatest story of all. God the Spirit lowered himself from heaven, took on a body in the form of Jesus Christ, and lived life just as we do. I can try and explain who God is, but I can’t do God justice by trying to explain him. I wouldn’t have any clue about any of this if God hadn’t shown me. And God will do the same for anyone who asks.
God knows who he is, and he wants a parent-child relationship with us all. If you really want to know who God is, ask. God will answer. The answer might not be what you expect, but he will definitely answer. The only way to get to know anyone is to spend time with them, and that’s all God wants—to spend time with us. The more time we make for our Lord, the more he can show us who he is. And trust me, the more time you spend with God, the more you will want to.
God is the missing piece
in our lives. Have you ever felt that way? Like something’s missing, and something’s just not right? Of course, you have, we all have. Well, it’s God. That’s what’s missing. It’s not a new car, a new romance, a new anything this world has to offer. You feel empty because you are. There’s a part of us that will never be whole until it reconnects to the one who created us. Once that connection is reestablished, there’s a joy that cannot be explained. No drug can duplicate it, and no emotion or feeling can compare to it.
When we first came into this world, we were just babies. We started from a seed and an egg, and as we matured, we grew into what we are now. The whole way, everything had to be learned—and I mean everything, right? We learned how to walk, how to talk, and so on. It’s the way we’re designed. So, if we never learn or are taught about God, we’ll feel that emptiness, and we should take it upon ourselves to seek him out. I whole-heartedly urge anyone who doesn’t know God to at this moment go to your safe space, wherever that may be, and ask him to introduce himself. I guarantee you, he will answer, and you will be so glad he did.
Let me close this chapter by reiterating that God is God. He is the beginning and the end and everything in between. I can’t even explain some of the experiences I’ve had with God, much less do him any justice by trying to explain who he is. God is the Creator of everything we know, and he wants a personal relationship with each and every one of us. God wants to be your father, your provider, your husband, your wife, your anything and everything. God is a spirit, and those that come to him must do so in truth. Don’t half-step with God. Do we think the one who created us can’t tell when we’re being honest or not? The more you get to know
