    Choose Life - Rance White

    Introduction

We can present an under-control Christian-looking myth of life to the world, but we cannot fool God. We cannot even fool ourselves. Our hearts cry out; our spirits are oppressed. The emotional pain is real.

Why does God seem so distant? We try and try and try, yet nothing seems to work.

There is an acronym for fear that fits our lives. You may say you have no fear, but in the truest sense of the word, that will appear untrue.

    False

    Evidence

    Appearing

    Real

Anything that presents itself as an obstacle keeping us from a fulfilled life is fear.

The scriptures tell us that through Christ, God has freely given us all things. The spirit of God has been released freely in the world, so through him, we have everything.

Nothing can stand between us and the accomplishment of our goals. The whole creation screams abundance, so who told us we can’t have it all?

God is no respecter of persons. If one person can have an abundance of love, joy, happiness, peace, and yes, money, so can we.

In God’s economy, there is no lack. If we are not at peace and satisfied in our lives, then something is wrong.

Let’s fix it. We can have a life of victory. We can have a life of abundance. We can enter the promised land. The gate is Jesus, the power is the Holy Spirit, and the key is obedience.

You can know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

    Chapter 1

    Father Knows Best

Why is it we look in awe upon people wholeheartedly committed to Jesus as though they possess a special something extra we seem to be lacking? Do they have a special prayer connection to God? Are they given special talents that God has chosen not to give to us?

I bet they spend half their day reading the Bible and praying. I wish I could do that, but I have to work for a living. They just travel around in full-time ministry, or they have a special talent for music and worship. I wish I didn’t have all these obligations that tie me down. I could do something special too.

You don’t have to go back through the Bible to make a list of people God used in extraordinary ways. There are plenty of people making a difference in the world right now.

You may not agree with everything they say or do, but you know they have made a difference in the world. These and so many more. If the writer of Hebrews tried to make a list now, there would be many more to choose from.

Of course the list was never meant to be exhaustive. The list was meant to be demonstrative. He wanted us to know they did it, and we can too!

God doesn’t want to turn you into Billy Graham or Mother Teresa. God wants to turn you into you. If you are not 100 percent committed to God, then you are not you. You are but a cheap imitation. The real you has yet to stand up.

The Bible never promised us that the Christian life was going to be easy. Jesus told us there was a cross involved, and Paul said we were to share in Christ’s sufferings.

What the Bible did say was we would never walk alone. The Holy Spirit is with you every moment of every day.

The same power that rose Jesus from the grave, the same power that called Lazarus from the tomb, the same power that multiplied the loaves and fishes, the same power that healed the leper; lives in us. So what is the common denominator in all of this or, even more to the point, in everything?

According to the Holy Scripture, there was nothing ever created; there was nothing ever done without the direct involvement of the Holy Spirit of God.

That’s the reason there are no two sets of fingerprints alike because God never duplicates anything.

You are a unique creation of God. The only person who could be you is you.

And God has a unique purpose for you. There is no one in all the creation God could get to accomplish this particular work better than you. So He is patiently working with you to turn you into the you that you need to be.

This is the work of the Holy Spirit. This is why trials and tribulation are in your life.

The circumstances in your life are designed to help you grow up into maturity. God wants to bless you and use you to bless others.

Then why doesn’t He just do it then? you ask.

You are standing in the way.

There is a point in your life when you realize God has a claim in your life. The curtains are lifted from your eyes, and you recognize your need for a Savior. At which point you say yes and receive the forgiveness that Jesus purchases on the cross, and your new life has begun.

You embark upon this new life with joy and enthusiasm. You pray, you read your Bible, you go to church, you witness. People call you a Jesus Freak, and old friends start to avoid you because you have flipped out.

You are one of them. You settle into this new life, and after a while, things settle down, and you become familiar with the Christian lifestyle. When exactly does mediocrity settle in?

I don’t know about you, but I can tell you what happened to me.

The Lord took me out of a nightmare of a life. There was nothing about my first twenty-four years of life that was even remotely ideal.

My heart was hard, and my blood was cold. I could safely say I hated everyone and everything, and of course I wasn’t to blame for my circumstances.

A dysfunctional family life and bad luck brought about my troubles. In short, I was scared, which I would never admit to and bitter.

I learned how to fight, I learned how to cheat, I learned how to lie, I learned how to use drugs, and I learned how to use alcohol. Oh, and I learned how to use people. I had no attachments to anyone I knew before I was twenty-four.
