Chapter 1
It was the day after Christmas, and the Andersons were on their way to Breckenridge to go skiing. They planned to be there until New Year's Day.
After about a two-hour drive, they finally got to the Breckenridge Lodge. The snowcapped mountains, the tall evergreen trees, and the white snow glittering in the sunshine around the lodge were very picturesque.
The Andersons went into the lodge and found a roaring fire burning in the fireplace. In front of the fireplace were a couple of couches and a coffee table. The Andersons looked around for someone who worked there, but nobody was around. Susan and Shelby went over to the fireplace to warm up. John and Daniel went over to the front desk and saw a bell with a sign beside it that reads, Ring for assists.
John rang the bell.
They heard a woman call, I'll be right there.
Before long a woman with black shoulder-length hair came to the desk. She looked to be in her early forties.
Sorry for the wait,
said the woman. How can I help you?
We have reservations here until New Year's Day,
answered John.
I'm sorry,
said the woman sympathetically. We should have contacted you. We are having trouble with the ski lift. We had it fixed once, but it's down again.
Is it possible that it could have been tampered with?
asked Daniel.
Hearing Daniel's question, Shelby went over and stood by her brother. Shelby and Daniel were always looking for a new mystery to work on.
With a look of bewilderment, the woman answered, Well, I don't know. I suppose it could have been tampered with.
We're the Andersons,
said Shelby. This is Daniel, and I'm Shelby. These are our parents, John and Susan.
My sister and I are amateur detectives,
said Daniel. We would like to help you find out what's going on.
It's nice to meet you,
expressed the woman. I'm Evelyn Harper. Let me call my husband and have him talk to you about this.
Evelyn picked up the phone and called her husband.
Sorry, Dad. I should have talked about it with you first,
apologized Daniel. Could we stay and help the Harpers out?
Susan had come over and joined the rest of her family and started listening to the conversation.
John looked over at Susan and asked, What do you think, Susan?
Sure, if they want Shelby and Daniel's help, that would be fine,
replied Susan. I would enjoy relaxing around here while Shelby and Daniel worked on their mystery.
John turned to his two young detectives and said, If the Harpers want your help, we can stay. But your mother and I have to be back to work the day after New Year's. Also, if you two want to finish high school this year, you can't afford to take a lot of extra time off from homeschooling.
Just then a man in his early forties came to the front desk. Evelyn talked to the man for a minute and then turned to the Andersons and said, This is my husband, James Harper.
The Andersons introduced themselves to James.
It's nice to meet you,
James said warmly.
A young girl came running into the room with a boy chasing her.
Mom, make him leave me alone!
screamed the girl.
Son, leave your sister alone,
ordered Evelyn. Come here, children, I want you to meet the Andersons.
The two children went
