Devin, Noah and the Woodshop Vandals

    Melissa Cleeman

Devin swept up the woodchips and sawdust from the floor and put them in her dust bin. Another day complete making toys in Santa’s Workshop. She looked around her workstation and smiled. Since Mr Foreman named her Head of Woodshop Toys, Devin made sure the area was clean and organised every day. She stayed back every night to tidy up and check there were enough materials to make wooden toys the next day. The elves had been working extra hard this year and were ahead of schedule.

The sound of more sweeping caught Devin’s attention.

Working late again, Cornelius? she asked her assistant, who was holding a broom on the other side of the workbench.

Only for a couple of minutes, Devin, he said. I’ll be leaving soon.

    No worries, she said.

Cornelius had also stayed back, even though he didn’t have to. She knew he was very disappointed when Mr Foreman named her Head of Woodshop Toys instead of him. He didn’t talk to her for a week after that, but they were friends again, much to Devin’s relief.

Are you ready to go, Devin? a familiar voice called out.

Be right there, Noah, she said, placing the broom and dustpan in the cupboard.

I can lock up, Cornelius said, smiling at her. Go and enjoy your dinner.

Thank you, Cornelius, Devin said. Enjoy your night too and I’ll see you tomorrow.

Good night, Cornelius said, and continued to sweep the floor.

As Devin walked towards the main doors, she looked above the entrance at the giant countdown sign.

Only seven more days until Christmas, she thought, walking towards Noah. He stood by the door, holding out her jacket.

Thank you, Noah, she said, putting it on.

You’re welcome, Devin, he said, his cheeks going red.

Devin giggled. His cheeks always went red whenever they talked – which was a lot over the last twelve months. Noah and Devin became good friends when Noah worked briefly at Santa’s Workshop three years ago. They had grown closer ever since.

    They had shared a dance
