    Rebecca Snail’s Christmas Party

    Jill Barlow

Rebecca Snail poked her head out of her home along the dusty track in the bush. It was a beautiful summer morning. The bush glowed in reds and greens and the fragrant colours of plants and flowers that were still fresh in the early summer.

Nocturnal creatures were heading off to bed and diurnal creatures were coming out for the day. Birds were twittering in the trees. The air vibrated with their sounds and their shadows fluttered about the treetops.

Tomorrow was Christmas Eve and Rebecca was super-excited. She’d already hung up her Christmas stocking and now she was about to throw her first ever Christmas Party. She had collected lots of foods that she knew the tiny bush creatures liked – and lots of juicy leaves for herself.

She’d even found a branch tip that had broken from the pine tree where she’d parked her home and fallen to the ground. Rebecca thought it would make an excellent Christmas Tree. She climbed all over the branch, decorating it with leaves, berries and seed pods in bush colours of reds and golds and greens.

Even though it was only about fifteen centimetres long, Rebecca had struggled to get the branch to stand upright. She slid under the tip, lifting it up and carefully balancing it on her shell while she slid down beneath the stem. The branch lifted, nestling amongst the stones, and eventually stood upright.

Rebecca sighed, sliding back to admire her Christmas Tree, sweating slimy mucous all over her body. The Tree looked beautiful!

Now, she set about inviting all the tiny bush creatures to her party.

She saw Boggy Moth up in his tree, fluttering and flustering about.

Hello, Boggy. Would you like to come to my Christmas Party? Rebecca asked. I’ve got lots of sweet nectar.

No, thank you, Boggy answered. I have to fly to my snowy mountain cave before it gets too hot.

Oh. Rebecca was a little sad, but she understood. Have a good flight, she smiled, and kept wandering.

She saw Charlie Cricket chirping his final calls before he went to bed for the day.

Hello, Charlie. Would you like to come to my Christmas Party? she asked. I’ve got lots of fruit and flowers.

A snail party? Charlie pulled a face. No, thank you.

    He hopped quickly away.

Rebecca was a little upset by Charlie’s rude manner. But there were still lots
