    Adeline gathered the sprigs of lavender in the lap of her apron and breathed in the fragrance. It was her favorite. Her mother had taught her how to crush the buds and sprinkle the fragments across their bedding and this had become the smell associated with home.

    She wandered further than she had been instructed in search of nettles for warding off negative spirits, and dandelions to boil in water. She knew the woods well. She knew the paths, the ponds, the berries to be collected for jam, and the leaves to be used for healing. It was where she came when she wanted to think. She loved the shadows
