    It seemed long ago when a woman, not young, not yet old, sat in her favorite chair. Through her frosted windowpane she looked out onto a winter garden. A tall cottonwood tree, large enough to shade her in the summer now allowed her to see beyond it. It was a view she usually welcomed but today a feeling of sadness covered everything in front of her. Her eyes were moist from her thoughts, thoughts that seemed to leave her helpless. It was a feeling she detested. This morning, however, she had this feeling of helplessness take over and there she sat in her usual chair at this time of the day and at this time of the year not

She had felt or been on the verge of this helpless feeling before and she had usually been able to summon up the courage to do something about it, to think of something, a possible solution to the problem or problems confronting her.
