Lisa Nixon Richard
Lisa was born and raised under the Big Sky of Montana. . After finishing college with a bachelor of education in history and English, she taught for three years in a small Montana school. In the meantime, she signed up to be a soldier. She left Montana for brief stints when attending various military schools and she retired with 20 years of service in the Montana National Guard. Lisa's father taught her the love of reading at an early age and her uncles taught her the love of storytelling. Many nights, she fell asleep to their stories of hunting and the great outdoors. When her husband introduced her to Robert Jordan, she fell in love with fantasy. Though she loves to write about faith and history, her true passion lies in magic and mythological creatures. She now writes fulltime while enjoying her many hobbies of travel, gardening, hiking, photography, crocheting and painting. She is ferociously proud of her two grown, military sons. She still lives under the Big Sky with her husband, daughter, and cat.

Brother and Sister
The girl walked into the small common room carrying a pail of water from the outside spigot. Her face filled with dread as she dropped the bucket splashing dirty water on her skirt and clean floor. She ran over to her brother. She grabbed at the piece of cake in his hand, but he defended the threat by pushing her off balance. Falling backward, her elbow hit the side of the pan; both she and the dish fell to the floor scattering cake all over the floor.
She burst into tears, Look what you have done.
Me? I am just eating the piece of cake I was blamed for eating last night. Because Iris, our dear step-sister, lied, I missed out on dinner and breakfast. We all know she ate the cake, not me. If I am going to get into trouble eating an invisible piece of cake, then I will eat cake.
But, you are going to get into even more trouble for a second piece of missing cake. Now we will both get into trouble because all of the cake is ruined.
Then let’s eat the bloody thing. I am starving. We can say that the cat knocked it over.
His mouth opened wide like a giant cavern. A whole chunk of cake disappeared.
Her mouth watered just watching him. Years had passed since the last time she remembered eating anything sweet without sneaking just a sliver so that no one would notice. She rarely dared to do even this because of the harsh reprimand of her foster mother if caught. Pushing back the doubts, she leaned over shoving the cake from the floor into her mouth. He joined her on the floor. They laughed at each other as the crumbs flew and frosting streaked their lips. The sweetness of the frosting tickled her tongue. She closed her eyes sighing in ecstasy. Quickly, she jammed more of the cake into her mouth.
The door opened. Both children froze not daring to look around at the inevitable fate that would cause the next round of punishment for Ivan. With icing smudged on her face, Alena shivered in dread.
Well, well, look at this. I suspected that yesterday’s piece of cake was the doing of you both.
The woman standing at the door grinned in anticipation. What lie did you have this time? Iris went to the village with me.
The woman’s daughter though named after a beautiful flower looked more like a weed. You can’t blame her. Were you going to blame the cat?
Ivan flinched. The foster mother heard the entire thing. She waited purposely to catch his sister eating as well.
"Not very smart since the cat came to town with us. Two lashes for the cake, two lashes
